Changes of scenery
on: February 20, 2016, 04:26:30 AM
Well, the next 6 months are going to be full of change. I have to leave my beloved central Montana in July, and trade it in for the steamy-hot swamps of Louisiana. It's been 13 years since I've lived in the Southeast. The Wife and I are kind of dreading the move (what, with three kids, and all) but it will be nice living closer to family for a change (5 hrs for hers and 9 hours for mine). We intend to make the most out of the location, as well. New Orleans, Dallas, Branson, Hot Springs are all within easy driving distance. Disney World will probably be happening in the next couple of years, too.

And to kick off the travelling theme to my 2016, I am in Wichita Falls, TX right now for Non-Commissioned Officer Academy until late March. Woooot woot. It's going to be a busy six weeks so I may not be around the site as much, but I'll check in when I get the chance.

This weekend is actually pretty quite on the curriculum front, so I am headed to Arlington, TX for the Supercross race in AT&T Stadium tomorrow night! Pumped! Does anyone know if I can take my Switchplier2 into the stadium? If not, what about an Explorer? Or probably no knives?

Congrats bud! You could always swing by on the way to Disney!

Plus you can vacation in Destin!

Be sure to take plenty of pics during the move, that's when MTs shine!

Probably can't take any knives into the stadium.  Good luck with your studies.

I've never been hassled over a pocket knife in Texas except at strip clubs. When half the population carries guns knives aren't exactly top on the priority list.

Then again it's been awhile since I've been to a public event in Texas.

Wow, thanks for the support, folks, and it's an honor to serve :salute:

The first week of NCO Academy has gone well (it is the easy week, of course), but I miss my Wife and children horribly, lol. I have been designated as flight leader for my class and guidon bearer for my drill and ceremony flight. Both of these are jobs I would not have volunteered for, but I am not the type to back down from a responsibility, so I am going to kill it. Their was some concern from instructors and classmates alike about my ability to be guidon with my wrist-situation (tendonitis, wearing a wrist brace), but we did a full run through on thursday afternoon and it was fine.

Concerning the move - I hate to leave Montana, but I am excited for a new place. I love to travel, but I have gotten to where I really hate moving. It's so disruptive and chaotic. But we'll manage.

Probably can't take any knives into the stadium.

I went to the AT&T Stadium website and "knives of any length" is included as a prohibited item :( oh well, it will still be fun, even without a multitool :tu:

Success! I made to Arlington and back. The main events were really exciting and I had a great time. I wish my family could have been with me, though. For anyone that's never been to a Supercross race in person, you need to go sometime.

I have to say, AT&T Stadium is RIDICULOUSLY nice! I spent the biggest portion of the event cruising around checking out the various observation decks.

I think it would have been pretty easy to get a MT into the stadium, as they make you hold all your metal in your hands up over your head and then wand you. But it's not worth the risk, IMHO

Almost forgot about this thread. I graduated NCO Academy on 25 March and got back home to my family two days later. It was a really good experience and I am thankful that I got the opportunity to meet everyone in my flight - we were a really good mix of personalities and everyone got along well. I had two members of my flight that are currently assigned to my future base in Louisiana, so I got a lot of good info and have a couple of points of contact for the move :tu:

The home team had to deal with some drama during my last week being gone, unfortunately. My Wife and 2 y.o. daughter both caught the H1N1 variation of the flu virus, aka swine flu. Thankfully we have a great support network here in Great Falls and some friends took my family in and took care of them in my absence. It still served to really stress me out and divert my attention during a critical time of the course. I got home the day their fevers broke, and I am happy to report that both are fully recovered and healthy now.

Thanks, folks! The move is just starting to ramp up. We are going to rent our house out, and we have a few projects to get done before we turn it over for the move. Of course, the mandatory declutter and yard sales/donation trips have started so that we can get rid of stuff that has accumulated but that we don't need anymore.

Anybody down around Shreveport? I have been following the local news, that place has been flooding really bad back in March. Kind of serves to cool my enthusiasm about moving to this place, lol

Closing in on moving day rapidly. I have been out-processing a lot the past month. Out-processing is a nightmare for those who may be unfamiliar with military life, as it is an almost endless string of appointments and needing to turn-in various forms (in person, even in this day and age) and you usually end up collecting several checklists along the way.

The packers showed up at my house this morning to start boxing everything up. It's really nice to have the option of having the military pay for pro's to come in and handle the packing and loading for us, but it is still stressful. Especially since I am stuck out at work, 2.5 hours from home. Due to poor manning, DoD-wide these days, my shop is having to work me almost right up until my departure date.

Getting the house ready to rent is coming along, as well. I still need to put some new vinyl down in the bathroom and put a banister/hand rail on the steps leading down into the basement, so I have few projects to look forward to that I'm sure will require a helpful Multitool or two (or three). Also, a little bit of painting will need to be done to cover some art-work my kids installed on a couple of walls

We got all my family's stuff loaded up yesterday, finished about 1800 :tu: the driver said he'd probably hit the road on Wednesday, and arrive to put it in temporary storage in Louisiana by the weekend. Hopefully we can find a place to rent quickly so we won't be without for too long. Also, the bigger concern is that school starts down there on August 8th, so we want to get settled ASAP.

Well, we said our goodbyes to Great Falls, Montana on Monday and made our way down to Denver yesterday. We have hung out here today just sort of taking a break from the road. Went to the aquarium, ate at some nice-ish restaurants, and played in the hotel pool (a lot). Tomorrow we are at it again bright and early.

We got our house in GF all ready for renters. My MP400 played a big hand in that process, putting in a bannister and removing nails, screws, and anchors from throughout the house. But I'm pretty sure it will need to be sent in for warranty repair. The pliers will not hardly open or close anymore after heavy use taking out a couple 4" Wood screws that had stripped out. Same deal I've described in the past with my Octane and, to a lesser extent, with the MP400. The 400 seemingly corrected itself previously and had been working fine until this latest issue. Anyways, not a big deal, and it will give me some experience with Gerber's CS.

Life on the road has been fun, what with 3 kids, a doberman, and a whole lot of stuff loaded up in the trucks.  :D
