Gonna need a Modder. Barnett H.H.H. Score
on: February 23, 2016, 03:38:14 AM
Some late night spending (got me in trouble!) But also got me this beauty. I usually scroll Etsy and eBay for vintage/antique fishing multitools.

And as soon as I saw the Barnett H.H.H. I fell in love with it. Pliers, awl, and knife. Simple, and gives me a little of "grandpa would have carried it" vibe.

There was one on ebay for 150 USD. And another with 4 minutes left for 36 USD, with a broken blade. Well I let the bidding hit a minute and just had the sudden urge to spend some credit. So the bidding jumped to 47 USD and I won.

So now I've got an expensive turd on the way, and need some advice, help, and woes on replacing the blade. Doesnt have to be original at all. Even a SAK blade I'll consider. I don't have a dremel, so I'll need to hire someone to take it apart, add a blade, and restore it (while it's apart).

Anyone else have one? Thoughts?

Yeah I think I can repair it and clean it up myself. I just need someone to "re-peen" it back together. I have never liked or been good at riveting.

That's a cool old MT, and kudos for wanting to fix it up  :tu:

I believe it was quite common to replace the knives on these as they were often worn out by use and sharpening.  Maybe some old knife restorers may have more info and parts ?

Congratulations on a beautiful old piece!

Rather than a SAK blade I would look for the blade from a Scout Knife as it will have more belly and be a bit more authentic- even though it is a replacement it might as well look the part, right?  :D

Failing that I would try something like this:

http://www.knifekits.com/vcom/product_info.php?cPath=1_425&products_id=2982

Buy the (relatively) inexpensive kit and use one of the blades from that to repair and customize yours.

Be careful though as the stag used in the handle of yours might be really brittle and could split easily when you take it apart.  If that happens I'd consider taking the whole thing apart and doing a complete clean and restoration of every part.  I'd also talk to someone like Syph007 about maybe using bolts to put it back together rather than trying to rivet or peen it.

Just my thoughts of course.... :D

Man I'd sure buy alot at $1.25 if I could go back in time.

I wonder what that would translate to in todays money.

Oh I found an inflation calculator.

1.25 from 1910 would be 28.17 in 2015.  Pretty cheap still :D

That is a very nice looking tool!

The hardest thing I find is to disassemble without damaging anything, takes a lot of patience and care

The best tool to remove rivets is a drill press and center drills.  Specifically it will need a number 2 or 3 center drill (probably a 3, its what I use for alox rivets).  Remove a cone of the rivet head then use a drift punch and the rivet will come out without damaging any parts of the knife.

I do have a full workshop at my disposal for this project, drill press, vice, grinders, dremels, etc....

Once I get it opened up I'll post more photos with caliper measurements and such.

Can't wait for it to get here :D should be Thursday.

Several of the Vic Garden knives have a carbon steel blade in them, and have a similar "vibe". Often they are sheepsfoot pattern though.

Totally okay with that. Just not sure if they will sit deep enough in the scales

I had been watching that auction. The Barnett Plier "HHH" knife's been a holy grail since I learned about it in the MTO Encyclopedia a few months ago. I decided I didn't need it, even though it was relatively rare--I don't buy knives with blades completely broken off at the tang.  Small portions (about 1/8 or so) of tips broken off and bad sharpening jobs--yes if the knife's cheap as in $5 or less.

I would want to leave it as is, but I'm all for changing the blade out since it would make the knife usable.  This looks like a great knife to carry. The stag? handles make the knife a beauty to look at.  Plus, they say the cutters can cut barbed wire in an old ad.

Rough Rider or Marble's should make a copy of this, like they have many old knives from the era. I'd buy one.

Since one was shown earlier, I measured my Camillus TL-29's blade It is 2 and 15/16 inches long (measured from bolster to tip) or 3.5 inches from back of pivot to tip and 1/8 of an inch thick measured with the blade half open. Keep in mind, both blades on the TL-29 have half-stops, meaning they are intended to stay half open in addition to fully open.  The pivot may need modification to fit in the Barnett's backspring.  If too thick, Utica Kutmaster, Klein (made by Utica, supposedly), and Ric-Nor electrician's knife blades may fit, since they're all thinner than the Camillus. Another thing, a modern Camillus TL-29 blade is thinner than an older one (the one I have is made in the 1970s), and so is a Camco (Camillus' budget line they used to have at one time)

Well, it should show up tomorrow in the mail but I might need to get it turned around quick.

I'll update this thread with more pics and measurements but it will most likely go up for sale with a few other things as well.

Well, I sold my Shimano Curado and Falcon Combo but I was able to keep the knife :D

This will be a slow project, I suppose the first thing I need to do is drill out a punch able hole in the rivets?

Any idea if the rivets in the scales go all the way through? Or just the ones in the end caps?
