I see a Rat 1 online with carbon fiber overlay and D2 for about $52.  Is this the one you are talking about?  I'm tempted.  I love the Rat lineup, but largely because you can get them for $25 or whatever.  But still, D2 and carbon fiber (over G10) is not bad at $52.

You know, I did not win Obi's Wave Challenge, so maybe I'm "entitled" to a new toy, eh?

Also have the usual scales in Orange, Tan, OD and black for $32

I'm even carrying my RAT 1 today for inspiration.  I will have one in D2 but not so keen on the blade numbering of the special release colors and CF.  Plain black with no limited edition numbering.

I resisted.  The $25 rat shipped to my door went up to $40 to get the D2 upgrade (without CF).  Don't think I want a $40 rat.  Plain ol' AUS 8 rat will be here on Monday.

I would have gotten D2 + faux G10 if I knew that was available.  Oh well.   There are worse things than D2 + carbon fiber.

Maybe I'll do a blade transplant, and have D2 plus orange scales.

Whats the fuss about?

Short version;
Cheap - less than Tenacious $30
Tough - strong liner lock and overbuilt construction
Ergonomic and practical - welds to the hand in use with a good shaped FFG blade

People have been using this knife for beater and hard use tasks because of the combo of features above; even alongside more expensive knives. AUS8 has proven ok "at the price" but now D2 is a real hard wearing steel lifting it way past the competition without changing the price much.

When I travel and there is a chance my knife may be stolen or lost I take a RAT 1. I am happy to have one as my only cutting tool for practical purposes.
XHP has been called the stainless D2, striving to be the level of D2 shows just how good it performs. Its semi stainless and not as bad as say M4 but less corrosion resistant than 8Cr13MoV;

What Sharky said.

The Rat 1 is just a pretty solid folder for $25 shipped.  I have always been into these value-priced blades, in part because they demonstrate just how nutty it is to pay $435 for a Sebenza or whatever.  The Rat 1 cuts stuff just like a spendy knife.  I own a few CRK knives, and I understand the whole "pride of ownership" and quality thing associated with spendy knives, but when you distill everything down, all of them cut stuff.  The Rat 1 does it quiet well (full flat grind) for not much money.

For my use they don't need to make the RAT II in D2.
I see the Model 2 as a smaller EDC knife where AUS-8 does fine.

D2 for the hard task Model 1 is perfect.

Is there a Rat 1 in D2 with standard scales?  If so, I would like to see a link please.  I'm not seeing it on the interweb.

The plastic scales on the Rat 1 and 2 do a very good job of mimicking G10.

Dang it.  Thanks.  I definitely would have gotten this one instead of carbon fiber - but I guess there are worse indignities than playing with a new carbon fiber knife in a couple of days.

Mine arrived today.  Here's what I posted on another forum.

Nicely constructed, blade centering is nice, feels good in hand and deployment is nice and smooth.

That being said, I had never imagined how heavy a 5-ounce nice really feels.  In addition, I was hoping for textured peel-ply CF as found on my Chaparral.  This is of the the very smooth variety.  It's OK, I guess.  It's just not what I was expecting.

Received my CF D2 today as well.  Its a decent knife for $50, but as I said above, I would have ordered plastic + D2 had I realized that it was available.  Half the fun of the Rat 1 is the entry level price, and $50 is about $25 above entry level.  But the CF D2 is fun, and will get carried.

That's what she said.

As for me I just keep repeating "I do not need a Rat 1"

For fifty bucks you could be half way to a Bradley 2. I know which knife I would rather have.

The Gayle Bradley 2 is $137, which is in a different time zone than the $49 Rat 1 CF.

I own the original Spyderco Gayle Bradley, but the occluded Spydie hole drove me totally bonkers.  You have that same design (flaw, in my view) on the Bradley 2.  I had my original Bradley modded to reveal the Spydie hole and liner lock like God intended.  It totally transformed the ergos.  I won't buy a Bradley 2, but I recognize that I'm in the minority.
