Schrade Tough lock problem
on: April 17, 2016, 09:31:39 AM
Hello fellow forumites.
I have a problem with my Schrade Tough tool, the older version (I think, according to the layered head).

I know a lot of people didn't understand how to unlock the blades, and the very peculiar locking system this tool had, but in my case I think the previous owner broke the locking mechanism somehow.

I think the locking bars are permanently bent too much, because none of the "gaps" in the tool touches the fine metal piece that fits in there and supposedly locks the implement.

In other words, all tools can be opened further than 180º from their original folded position.

I think this is a flaw, and even pressing down the metal bar they don't catch the tools or apply any contact/pressure to them. Can anyone confirm?

Any possible fixing or solution will be appreciated. Thanks everybody.

These tools had locking tools but no obvious way to unlock them once fully opened (you are supposed to only fully open one tool at a time, and half open another tool to release the lock).

If someone fully opened all the tools on a handle they then got stuck open.  If you weren't careful levering up the tab to release the lock it could get bent so it no longer locked.  Looks like that has happened to your tool.

Two ways I can think of fixing it:

1  Drill out the rivet, remove the rivet, remove all tools, bend the locking tab down again to where it should be, re-rivet (or replace the rivet with a screw).  This might be OK, or the metal in the locking tab may have been fatigued and won't have the spring necessary to function properly.

2  Buy a complete replacement handle(s) from ebay ( I think I see them offered by people who bought spares when the Schrade factory in the US sold off everything).

I hope you get your tool going again, it looks like it has the rare combo edge knife blade with small serrations (most of these tools had larger serrations on the knife blade).

Greg has hit the nail on the head.  There's not a lot that can be done to salvage that poor tool.

If you try to replace it I strongly suggest you avoid the modern versions as they are stamped from the cheapest monkey poo that Taylor Cutlery can find.

The Tough tool I had didn't work this way . There was one blade or tool in each handle that didn't lock and you pushed down on it to unlock the other tools.

I agree that it would be hard to fix. you would have to remove the tools from the handles to be able to bend the tabs far enough.
