Some stainless goodness

I bought some bar stock Sandvik 14C28N on impulse, googled and realised I couldn't do the heat treat.

Made a deal with my teacher to give him the rest of the steel in exchange for heat treating 2 blades.

I'm making these knives for 2 special people - my parents:

Stick tangs open up new possibilities, but I found out quickly it's not easy, and to be honest the brass at both ends fit less than perfect......also means I learned a lot building this one.

This is my first stick tang knife so its not perfect, but not bad either and I learned a lot.

I did the polishing with a Dremmel so it's less than perfect, as soon as my big cotton wheel is up it will get a few passes on that










Edge is good, the knife slices paper and eats wood, and since its only 3mm stock it should be a good cutter

This is my dad's 70th birthday present, I doubt it will see much use, so the sheath is just a little blade protector.  As you can see my polishing wheel is working  and I don't know how to photograph anything that shiny 
Only thing I didn't do was the heat treat, but no surprise my teacher did a good job of that.
It's extremely sharp, push cuts paper and you can change direction at will.
This is my 2nd and last stainless steel (14C28N) knife for now, but considering the results I think it would be worthwhile getting a proper heat treat oven at some stage......I'm a carbon steel man, but stainless has it's moments

I always suspected as much considering many Kukris are highly polished 5160, which in my own experience rusts readily.  For the life of me thought I can't figure out how or why it works

AFAIK it's down to a smoother surface not holding minute water droplets as readily as a rougher one.

Makes sense......

Just to prove the stainless point, at some stage the blade was taped up and the tape got soaked, next day when I took the tape off there were a couple of blemishes on the blade.
