Let's Play Chopsticks!

Okay, we have a few Spork posts, yet none for Chopsticks??? Where's Chopstix, Mistress of the Slippery Noodle when you need her?!?

When I went back to college in my 40's I decided to try things that I wanted to do but never got around to it. And was also on a diet kick too. So... decided to try chopsticks. Figured that I'd be eating so slow perhaps I'd lose weight since it would take me forever to consume food with them. In time though I got so good at using them that I was no longer a slowpoke until it came to Japanese noodles - thems too slippery to wrangle!

Here is my personal set of Rosewood chopsticks. An end got broke off of one so I broke the other end to match and filed them down. Bought these from Everything Chopsticks out of Eugene, Oregon back in 2006 think it was.

Personally, I like this long thin Thai chopsticks with best with the rounded transition.

    Spare house set

And another set of Rosewood in the car glove compartment, where a Mountain House Spork resides too.

I like the idea of chopsticks, not for eating but for grabbing stuff... However, I lack the skill necessary, so no chopsticks for me.
It wouldn't be the internet without people complaining.

It isn't difficult. Was a bit harder at first missing a ring finger. Later I adapted to using 2 fingers and the thumb like the diagram.

I had a nice set of rosewood and titanium ones I purchased on eBay years ago.  They were nice, but I rarely ended up using them so I ended up giving them to a friend's kid who loves sushi.  I thought he could make use of them more than me.

Since then I have been tempted to get another set.  Chances are if you are reading this forum then you know how it goes....  :ahhh

I've got a reusable set of 5 for less than $2 at Lidl. They work great and are quite helpful for losing weight

My wife and I got annoyed with having to treat chopsticks carefully (no putting them in the dishwasher, for instance), so we got some stainless steel ones. One of the best purchases we have made for kitchen use. Strong, machine washable and last “forever”. I have understood steel chopsticks are pretty common in Korea? (I think those we bought are made in Korea.)

The Vargo is the smallest of the three...but the least fiddly. The SP and GT stick have a tiny (easily misplaced or lost) end cap and they screw together like a pool cue. The Vargo is only two pieces...pull out and insert in reverse.

Not a big fan of all metal Korean style chopsticks. They do work well as fire tongs if you're a Hobo stove user...

The short ones are child/travel size (7-1/8" L) and that is a Korean dinner spoon.

My favorite outdoor users are just standard bamboo chopsticks with a couple mods. I prefer blunter tips of the Chinese style, so I shorten then from the eating end to about 8". The lanyard is large enough to not interfere with using them, keeps the sticks together and can be clipped to a carabiner.

The bottom pair is unmodified.

Is it sad that I really want a set of those?

Although I'd probably opt for a more classic Luke Skywalker or Darth Vader version....

Although a Darth Maul set would be convenient if you could stick them together when not in use.....

Not sure about these Brunton Flipsticks...seems like the wire handles would hard to hold on to.

Yeah, those just look awkward.... Although I do like that the tips of the sticks look like they might be somewhat protected.

Just got this set from Ebay for my lunch kit. The flatware is full size, the sticks are about 7.25"

It appears I'm on a travel chopstick binge  :ahhh I just got these Kikkerland Travel sticks off ebay...funny thing is they do not resemble the photos from the listing. The wood portion is longer on the ones I received...I like them though.

Every time I open this thread all I can think of its that bit in the movie Balls of Fury when Mako sticks his chopsticks up Dan Fogelberg's nose to reprimand him for something, then a moment later continues eating his noodles with them. ....   :ahhh

The last time I was at a Japanese resutuant, I asked for a knife and fork. My response to why no chopsticks didn't go over too well. Apparently, remembering a certain harbor in Hawaii is not a Japanese thing...

I don't recall chopsticks being used at any point in the Pearl Harbour attack, but maybe my knowledge of those events are a bit hazy?

That also strikes me as quite rude- I hope that you could attribute that behavior to some chemical pollution.
