Favourite magazines.
on: May 16, 2016, 12:09:54 AM
Just curious at what magazines you like to read?

I like to read a variety of magazines.

Years ago, I used to read Boot religiously, which was the precursor to Maximum PC. Once it switched over and Brad Dosland left the helm back in 99, that publication fell, as did my reading it.

I still buy the odd PC Gamer magazine, and of course, Maximum PC.

When I got into motorcycles, I then moved to many motorcycle publications. American Baggar was the one I would usually buy, next to Canadian Biker.

Currently, I am mostly into shooting sports...so those are the publications I tend to gravitate towards these days. My favourites are Recoil, Shooting Times, and Guns and Ammo to name a few.

However, my most favourite publication I am now buying...much like Boot used to be back in the 90s, is American Frontiersman. What a wonderful publication that is. I read it cover to cover.

I use to read maximum PC all the time, but I drifted away from it

now I read 2600, the Hacker Quarterly

I use to get Linux Format, but it is very expensive

I enjoy reading Mag Pi (Raspberry Pi Magazine) but I do not read it regularly.

sometime I get special issues of Retro gamer, such as the one pictured below

Ive become a little fustrated with magazines...they seem to be more about pushing product than anything else...

The only mag I read religiously is Motorsport. One of the things I love is that they're not afraid of saying something unpopular...they're road tests of modern cars can be scathing;and they're not slow to point out what's wrong with scared cows like Formula One!

I occasionally pick up Fortian Times, which I'd describe as Britain's foremost journal of weird smurf.

I used to read a few mountain bike mags, but they're less about riding and far more about buying the latest gear(and sorry,I really don't need carbon ceramic disc )

Airgun mags a joke. The reviews are bought and paid for by the gun manufacturers, though some of the hunting articles can be good
There is no beginning,or ending, and for this we are thankful, cos now is hard enough to understand!

Mainly, adventure kayak and rapid.

So far it is one of the best ways I have found to learn more about kayaking, something I need.

I used to read various car magazines, 4Wheeler, offroader, Car, classic car, etc., though the only one i buy these days is the top gear magazine, when I am flying.

I have also bought the odd hunting magazine, fishing magazine, and I used to buy PC magazines many years ago and some adult magazines (for the articles).

With the internet and YouTube, these days, I do not buy anything regularly, apart from the TG magazine.

I wish MTO has a magazine

you know it could have a "deep SAK knowledge" reoccurring section by jazzbass

a "Photos of Favorites" by Dan (and others here too)

a "Review of the Week"

an "Unintended uses of common tools" spot where people are telling other ways to use tools (the hook as a stand for example)

maybe even a "spot the difference" and a MTO related crossword puzzle.

we might even be able to get some sponsorship money from Victorinox, Leatherman, SOG, Gerber, Etc.
If I can help, let me know

I have a subscription to Jeep magazine for my tablet but I rarely do more than flip through it.

Mainly, adventure kayak and rapid.

So far it is one of the best ways I have found to learn more about kayaking, something I need.

I read a few kayak mags online, but it is more of an e-zine.

To be honest, I learn more about kayaking when I'm out kayaking than by any other method.  I have little interest in reading about it or watching videos, I just want to go out and do it.

MTO magazine?  I never thought of that.... :P

In general I agree, and most of what I know comes from doing.

The other thing is I don't have someone to go out with, so I don't have anyone to bounce ideas off of, or be inspired by.  Magazines and websites fill the gap, I suppose inspiration and ideas is the bigger thing then learning per say.

Well, with kayaking it's great because there are really only two outcomes- figure it out quickly or become a statistic.

So far I've avoided being a statistic..... but some days were probably closer than I'd like to admit!

I was once conned into taking a kayak rescue course (at a mere $10) by a friend (who also required me to pay their $10 as well) and everything we learned about water entries and the like I'd already figured out on my own years before.... and in freezing cold water too.

I'm not saying I know everything- even I wouldn't be dumb enough to make a claim like that.  But I do know the things I need to know for what I do, and I learned them by doing.  The magazines are nice to look at  (big fan of Rapid Media) but I'm pretty good on my own.

That having been said, Megan is insisting I take a whitewater course before getting a whitewater boat and trying to drown myself.

The Christian Research Journal is my personal favorite, though I also subscribe to and enjoy Handgun magazine.  I would not mind checking out a knife magazine like Blade, but don't know much about them.  I'm more into production and  EDC knives rather than custom makes.

I've rarely had magazines in the past few years, since most of what I read is available online.

In the past I used to get Electronics, PC (Gaming and in general) and similar, and regularly checked out old issues of FineScale Modeler from the library.
The difficult we do immediately, the impossible takes a little longer.

Last year I bought a book about kayaking disasters, it was going to be a joke for my mom who worries about me going out alone, then I had a few close calls, and I read it.  And it helped me with a few safety points that I was probably too lax about (like working out how to empty the boat out and get back in, in the water).  So, it is nice to get another opinion.

I have never taken a class, thought about it but so far my wallet has won out.  That said I would want someone with me who knew white water, for the first few trips.

And now for the summer I am going to have to figure out tides.

Fine Scale Modeller rocks! IT,and Model Railroader just completely changed my perspective on modelling back in the day!

Yeah fsm reminded me constantly how poor my model building skills were,  but it was helpful and inspiring too

FSM was one of my favorite magazines for years.  Boy did it make me feel inadequate, and that I must have extra fingers or that many of them were jointed backwards.

I loved looking at all of the cool things people were making though.

I try to pick up Zines whenever I can,

They're getting rarer as people just whinge online now, but there's a few truly off-kilter people still publishing independent works (mostly on truly off kilter subjects)

I have little to no respect for glossy Magazines, and the few things I once subscribed to have since moved to "digital only" as they couldn't afford integrity and printed media.

I will google American Frontiersman after this though, Don't fail me Chako.

(Incidentally, my favourite Bookstore/Source of Zines closed recently. I am not Pleased.
