Cellphone carry?
on: September 13, 2008, 05:21:48 AM
So I finally dropped Verizon since my contract expired. I'm now with Page Plus Cellular, who happens to use Verizon's network. It's a prepaid deal and for me and the family, it's the catzazz. :)   So I gotz me a new cellphone, a Motorola w385. Now I've never been a big fan of belt-worn cell cases ... they're just too bulky and I seem to hit the darn thing when I'm walking around. This whole thing got me wondering how you appleheads carry your cellphones, especially any unconventional ways. Care to tell?

Ah yes, the trusty pocket. Well, I would but it doesn't fit in the front pocket and I'd be afraid of forgetting about it in the back pocket and sitting on it. I just ordered a holster by Raine, the 075T3H, which fits slim phones. Should get it by Tuesday. Hopefully it'll be nice and slim and out of the way. I always seem to bump into things when I wear my phone on my belt. It's like a subliminal magnet draws me into doors, desks, etc...   ???

Dang what pants do you wear? I've never seen any that can't fit a cellphone in front pocket, pants designed for male anyway.  :D

I carry my krzr in right front pocket.

I use a belt case. It's a heavy duty black nylon case I got from Lowes. Fits on my belt either horizontal or vertical, or with the very strong clip it has. This is actually my second one. I had my old one for 4 years, and it lasted a long time, but it finally looked beaten and worn and I had to replace it.

Why belt case? Well, I tried my pockets, but being as my wallet is in my right front (harder to get picked, and better for posture), and key lanyard usually goes in left pocket, there is no room. Multiply things in the same pocket tends to get messy fast when you need something quick. It's a lot easier to retrieve a phone from a pouch when its ringing then go rifling through your pockets. Also, it puts a little space between your body and the phone. Can't be too careful.

I received the Raine 075T3H case. I really like it. Very slim profile, fits my w385 perfectly, and it's pretty well made. It can be worn either vertically or horizontally on your belt. Definitely worth it, IMO. I got it from The Supply Sergeant, http://www.militaryclothing.com/ . $16 with shipping. Not bad for a quality holster. I've tried pocket carry but never liked it. I thought of making a Kydex holster that I could neck carry but I nixed that idea. I figure the Kydex's tight fit would be enabling the side buttons, thereby killing my battery quickly. I may just try it yet but for now my new Raine holster is the cat's arse!

As an "uber-geek" I have a GSM Palm Treo 680, which replaced my Treo 600.

This is not a small unit.  There's plenty of Siberian ant-leather holster/cases out there for mucho bucks.  Expensive and they don't really do the job.

I'm on my second "Bucket Boss" holster with a solid belt loop and velcro flap.  You can get these at Home Depot.  Originally designed for a two-way radio, they are great for a huge geeky internet all-seeing all-dancing "cellphone" like I carry.  Cheap and cheerful.  There's even dual loops on either side for a FSP and a Sharpie.  Bathroom walls are not safe around me.  :ahhh

I have way too much EDC so now I'm looking at the folks at Rip-Offs holsters.  Bottom line is that great stuff can be had for under $20 as long as you have no leather fetish.   The nylon/velcro "cheapo" variety has lasted me no less than 3 to 4 years.

I never liked the look of leather cellphone cases. They always look chinsy and cheap, even the more expensive ones. NiteIze http://www.niteize.com/  has some very cool cases. We started carrying them now at my p/t job and I must say I'm impressed. Good build quality, good belt hook, and side straps/pockets to carry other things like MiniMag type lights and pocket knives. Still, I'm highly digging my Raine for my w385. So far it's holding up well and is very unobtrusive.

Wish I could say the same, Gareth!  :(  That's how my 815 finally bit the dust.  :o  So far the Raine has been holding up extremely well and still looks great. I love that I can wear my phone horizontal or vertical without any fuss. Just slip a belt in the right loop and away you go. I highly recommend the Raine pouches/holsters.

pocket carry is the best way not too lose your phone. I worked in the cell phone business for a while and we all know the deal if you lose your phone it's ether $200 for a new one or the same amount to break your contract. most cell phone pouches use a clip and it's a sure fast way to say bye bye to your expensive headset.

I used to carry them on my belt when they were big.  I think the last phone I carried that way was the Nokia 5110; since then I've put them in my pocket.

Belt carry round here would just get you stared at these days.  Though for some reason having it dangling round your neck is considered OK  ???

Hmm, there's a plan, I could start to neck carry my SAK  :D

I used to love to wear my phone(s) on a holster clip and either attach it to the shoulder strap on my backpack or wear it on my belt.  I hardly use a backpack anymore so up until two years ago, I was wearing my phone (Motorola v265) on my belt... until it came loose and I lost my phone in the middle of a snowstorm.  >:(

The problem as it turned out, was that my phone's holster case (made by body glove) had the removable clip and the [very sensitive] release button was on the bottom of the clip (big mistake) so if I would sit down, I could accidentally press the release button and my phone would fall off.  That's exactly what happened.  :(  Trust me when I say it wasn't fun retracing my steps in a blizzard and digging through snow that was almost up to my waist for almost 3 hours straight.

Anyways, I bought a new phone (RAZR v3i) immediately after that used the holster case that came with that phone.  It's a good case (the release button is at the top of the clip which is a good thing) but the case is a bit large and feels awkward to wear.  (It sticks out a lot because of the extra secure and extra fat clip.)  Now, I just keep my cellphone in my pocket.  To make sure it doesn't get scratched, I don't keep anything else in that pocket.

One way of carrying your razr is in the case but without the clip (if it's one of the form fitting types that still lets you use your phone), it'll protect it from scratches and you can keep other items with it.

No, it's one of those button closure pouches; like a multitool carrying case.  To use the phone, I have to open the pouch and pull the phone out.  It's a nice pouch but it adds a lot of bulk to a RAZR so I'd rather just keep my RAZR in my pocket.  The v3i also has a metal body so it doesn't pick up scratches easily.

Also, ever since losing my last phone, I've been really careful with my new phone. I even use a bluetooth headset now instead of taking my phone out of my pocket.

Constantly buying new phones to replace the last one can get pretty expensive.  Gotta save my money for multitools and gadgets... ;)

I found a really really good holster/case combo for carrying my phone and 98% of the time that's what I do.  But i also carry it in my pocket or if I'm on the bike I carry it in a pouch made for a camera.  It means i have to wear shorts that have belt loops so I can wear a belt, but it's awesome.  Or I carry it in the outside pocket of my backpack or in the little Timbukt2 Slider pouch...I love that thing.
