Mods if this is in the wrong place please move it (Carry Methods Forum??) Well I always liked these Moppe boxes from IKEA (stock photo) – But never really had a use for one.
When my SAK collecting started exploding - At first the SAKs were just in a draw in my desk, along with other desk items – I soon realised I needed SAK specific storage, and stole a couple of wooden toy/jigsaw boxes from my son.
They were soon out grown and a more permanent, and larger, solution was required.
I realised that the Moppe drawers were exactly the right width and depth, but twice as high as they needed to be - So a little mod sprang to mind.
I would convert each drawer into two drawers and create and eight drawer SAK Moppe box.
If I had been really conservationist and frugal I could have literally converted one draw into two and made a new bottom for the top half
...... Too much like hard work - So I went the easy way and bought two Moppe boxes. The drawers were all cut in half and one of the frames was taken apart to make the extra two shelves.
Cutting the drawers in half without a band saw was a nightmare. I marked the drawers up with a pencil on all four sides and used a tenon saw – But I just could not keep the saw straight over the two (or three) right angled sides, as you can see, below.
The original plan was to have the openers like the originals, and cut a finger hole in the drawers, however I realised that the hole would come too far down the front and expose the contents – So I decided to go for a knob. I searched the internet and did not find any I really liked of the right size, favourites were some little knobs that I realised looked just like dowelling – So I then thought, ‘Of course – Just make my own out of dowelling’.
Here’s the end result. The little smiley face was put there by my son to mark the drawer that contains his favourite SAK – A Wenger Snife – Handy pattern, which he borrows when we needs a SAK.

I like the miscellaneous drawer as it contains a real variety:-
A few 84mm SAKs, a couple of Farmers, a Buck Wenger SAK and some Leathermans – a PST in its sheath and a Skele.
As you can see each drawer holds about 10-12 SAKs depending on width - So the whole unit holds about 90 SAKs/multis.
There is an epilogue to this story, and I will also show you what I did with the top cut off portions of the drawers in a little while.
