As mentioned yesterday, went with a Sowbelly today.

These 5 blade, Rifle Shield Winchesters in Burnt Orange bone are pretty scarce....shame the shield was gone. Queen made with carbon steel blades and the price was right at less $20.00. Will probably get the scales replaced at some point.  Makes for a neat EDC as is.

(Image removed from quote.)

These, I probably won't carry.

Winchester "Black Box" Sowbelly in dark Rogers Bone.

Winchester Cartridge Shield Sowbelly in Burnt Orange Bone.
(Image removed from quote.)

And finally, A Case Bros Sowbelly in light brown Rogers Bone.
(Image removed from quote.)

I keep mentioning "Rogers Bone" so I thought an explanation was needed. From what I've read, Queen and Blue Grass Cutlery bought a lot of it to use on the Winchester knives for Blue Grass Cutlery. The dark bone on the "Black Box" Winchesters (approx '87-'92) is also referred to as "Utica Bone" as it's Rogers Bone reportedly bought from the Utica Cutlery Co.  The Case Bros light brown bone is supposed to be Rogers Bone as well but I know no particulars on it...

Here's some info on the bone from Roger Manufacturing from Levine.
http://pweb.netcom.com/~brlevine/bonehand.txt

The "Black Box" Winchester thread over on BF is also a wealth of info on these knives.

Nice collection of sowbellys! :tu:

Thanks Grathr!!

+1 Great knives, those Buck Stockmans!

Day 14

Case Humpback Stockman in smooth chestnut bone. Severe blade rub on this one, you can see it there on the spey blade. Goes with the territory on this pattern I think. I've had three in the past, sold one of them, all have had rubbing between the spey and sheepsfoot blades.

May it be as the Pattern has chosen.

That smooth chestnut bone is lovely on your stockman. I had a humpback whittler at one time.  It was well built with no rub, but that one is a 3-spring pattern, so really no chance of that happening.

I sold it to someone here at MTO.  I'm hoping I see it here in this thread.

Thank you! I really like the smooth chestnut SS and the jigged chestnut CV families. All of mine look really great, with deep even color.

I'd like to see that whittler too!

Mine has the same issue. :( Too bad really, it's a beautiful knife.

Indeed. On this one, I tolerate some rubbing, but normally I just move them on because I hate looking at the scratches. I wish Case could reach Victorinox's level of quality here, comparatively few of my SAKs have any rub anywhere. But that's just wishful thinking.
May it be as the Pattern has chosen.

Traditional knives either bring out pride of ownership and appreciation for things gone by.
They can also remind us of when things were simpler and working knives were found everywhere. Nothing like having something classic that you can be proud of.

When it really comes down to it; it is all about the blade or blades.
How about a 3 1/2 inch clip point out of perfectly heat treated 14c28n ground quite thin behind the edge.

G10 liners; shaped orange G10 "covers" and lightning strike Carbon fiber bolster make for a good looking but surprisingly not over the top knife.

Hand made bearing the knife makers guild logo.

They don't call JD Ellis the king of the slipjoint for nothing.
No doubt about it; if I lived in the UK I would carry the sub 3 inch version of this Lannys Clip all the time.

Just a traditional folder from ICEL. Ivory-like scales, great slicer and very confortable to use.
