How much of the Rio Olympics did you actually watch
on: September 02, 2016, 07:31:06 AM
Because of the time period the Olympics took place, and the lack of anything interesting in them, for me, I ended up having better things to do than to sit in front of the TV and watch them. (the sea, the beach, mermaids, traveling etc.)

So, I did not watch any part of them, (not even beachvolley) and did not follow them in any way.

How much of them did you watch? Poll!!

Haha. Seriously, well done on the poll mate! I didn't watch much of the events however. The opener was blah, the fireworks at the end were cool. Everything in the middle was meh. The lochte thing was dumb.

Women's beach volleyball saved it for me... Voted  :D

I accidentally posted the poll, before it was finished (too much excitement...)  Sorted now.

I did follow Bolts sporting activities, after the Olympics, as they were in all the papers.

I accidentally watched a few events, but I have no idea where they fell in the scheme of things (ie, heats, finals, etc)

Sad to say, the last few olympics have not inspired me much, and I don't make an effort to watch.

It's a pity, because there are a lot of inspiring athletes (especially in Individual Effort type contests - Archery, Gymnastics, Weight lifting, Athletics and the like)

I voted "Just some specific parts" - and those parts were the ones where the British had a chance of a medal.

I probably watched more this year than in the past tbh, possibly because I was off work - dunno.

I used to come here a lot.

I watched as much as they showed for as long as I was awake, it was really interesting this time. With the time difference they showed a lot more of the non track sports which was great.

I'm glad it wasn't just me watching.  I can watch and enjoy just about any sport on the planet (just as long as it's not football) so I'm afraid to say I sat up and saw as much of the Olympics as I could.

The one thing that made me sick to my stomach was the booing of the French pole-jumper, not only while he was trying to compete but then later at the medal ceremony.

Voted, I would have liked the chance to combine options.

As for booing that Gareth says, I'll just comment that IMO the Olympics really aren't what they were supposed to be. And since when is golf an olympic sport?

Here's how long jump was done back in the day:

Is it me or does that 3rd "jumper" look extremely out of place in that sequence of photos? His feet are flat and he looks like he's going to jump out and not out. Seems like 3 should be out and 2 should go to 4.

I voted all the sports that interested me although I didn't catch all of them.

I watched the women's beach volleyball, swimming and  track and field. I did watch some of the women's gymnastics as well.

Not really, at least I think not. The things he's holding are called halteres and they're quite heavy. At the stage picture 3 is showing one needs to compensate that weight and control the momentum generated by swinging the halteres so it's only normal that one puts one's heels on the ground. Otherwise it would be very difficult to perform a jump while on tiptoe  ;)

I don't have cable, so basically none. I did get lucky, and while I was at a family gathering I saw Katie Ledecky dominate the 800 freestyle (I used to be a distance swimmer in high school, so I really like those events), and I saw some of the more "memorable" moments posted of other websites. The Olympic Torch was pretty neat this year, and as an American I'm pretty unhappy with the whole Lochte thing. I mean, we all knew he was kind of a jerk, but come on, that sort of thing is just disgraceful.

I watched at least some of every sport they had...I geek out about the Olympics every time, my wife usually rolls her eyes.  I don't really know why, but I get really drawn in, and it's a big let down when they end.  I didn't spend all that time sitting on the couch though.  I had streaming set up on my phone so I had it on my desk while I was working, or watched on mute while I was putting kids to bed.  But it was taking over my phone pretty much the whole time.  Watched a lot more archery and fencing than I ever have, but really focused on the swimming, gymnastics, and track and field (being that's what the US broadcasting focused on).

Some things were on in the break room at work, so I overheard a couple running, high jump, and volleyball events while reading my Kindle on lunch. Didn't pay attention to them, otherwise.

I love the Olympics.  I loved them more when you had to wait 4 years to see it, as opposed to every 2 years now.  I work at home, and I can have the tv on quite a bit to watch stuff like that.  Right now I'm really into U.S. Open tennis coverage.

There was some good stuff at the Rio Olympics.  The Korean archery chicks were smokin' hot, and I somewhat enjoyed seeing teams come up short when they expected to win - like U.S. women's volleyball and soccer/football.  Maybe I'm a bad person.

Basically about an hour a day after work if NBC claimed they were going to show paddling or rowing, and some swimming, but really just the Phelps races.

I watched the cycling road race the second day start to finish. Other than that, if something was on NBC at night, i'd just have it on in the background. I did watch all of Bolt's events..

None. After 2004 I got Olympicsick and after 1992 I got TV sick. Lately I feel even more massculturesick, although I just can't achieve comolete abstinence on that. I would have to cut of SAKs and stuff, wouldn't I?

Same here. I actually watched a lot of the Olympics this year. Got to see some interesting things (an injury timeout in ping pong  ), and sports you don't normally see. For example, I was yelling "center it!" ans "shoot!" during water polo, as if I was watching hockey.....  I watched a lot of the track and swimming events.

Did you see the cycling last night? The 2 Brit women who won golds far outclassed the silver medal positions and had caught them by half race distance, awesome job.

Yeah, it was definitely impressive.  Especially impressive when one of them has been competing at the Paralympics since 1992 and the other only took up cycling three years ago.

The wife and I ended up watching a lot more than we probably expected to, a lot of it during the live broadcast which meant late at night for us. I think we missed a lot of the stuff we actually wanted to see due to the scheduling. Plus the obvious where they would switch to a different sport in the middle of an event because there was a Spanish athlete up for a medal.

I tend to prefer the winter olympics.
The difficult we do immediately, the impossible takes a little longer.
