Wood Carving
on: September 07, 2016, 07:10:47 PM
I just got a Flexcut starter set of carving tools yesterday.  I decided to splurge and get the set because it had the carving knife I originally wanted to start with plus a detail knife and two palm gouges.  After playing with them all last night I can see that I'm going to really enjoy this new hobby.  I also got my first proper strop to keep these in scary sharp shape, and I cannot believe I went this long without one.  I took my Rebar's blade to it last night and I have never seen that blade so sharp!

Here's a carving I started with my Rough Rider whittler, and finished with these flexcut knives last night.  It started out as a bell shaped blank, so I can't take credit for the dome, but I'm going to carve that up anyways and make it look a bit more rough to complete the carving.  My work buddy(who got the same knives) supplied the blank and we are going to have weekly contests carving the same thing for a while to hone our skills.

I'm pretty excited about this new hobby.  Does anyone here carve or whittle?

Thank you gents!  Sure is a fun thing to do to pass the time.  Very relaxing.  I went and picked up a 2x2x6 block of basswood last night, and another blank like the one I made that carving out of.  I'm not sure what they will be yet, but I'll get started on them today.

Awesome work!

I have dabbled into whittling slightly in the past. Made a few basic things. Did not finish a bunch of stuff. I like the idea of whittling certain things with only a SAK, but I also would love to get some proper whittling knives and see how precises and well I can make something.

For one of the more basic things I still wan't to make is a tiny Canoe with paddle. I may have to get back into whittling.   :tu:

A canoe would be awesome!  I'm looking at trying my hand at a folded leave fruitbowl.  I'm gonna need a few more chisels and I'll have to get my new workbench built first though.
