Very cool! Thanks for sharing.  :tu:

Kind of strange it was just laying in plain sight. You would think if it was lost that long ago it would have been covered by dirt, debris, ect, over the years.

A bit surprising, but debris moves. Perhaps it was first covered with debris over the years, then varying weather slowly (or quickly, Iceland being Iceland) uncovered it again. I doubt the steel in the blade would have survived as well as it has done without it having some cover over the years.

Very cool.  I'd love to see where it was found and see if there was some reason it survived as well as it has.

I was thinking something similar. Depending on the region it may have possibly been covered in snow/ice for quite a long time. Since global warming is happening maybe the snow/ice has melted leaving it exposed for them to find.

Mrs. Powernoodle and I recently finished watching The Last Kingdom on Netflix, and are now binge-watching Vikings.  So this is quite a timely story for us.

Yeah, there is increased water flow from glaciers now, and winters are weird, so that might have something to do with it.

(The Norwegian glaciers are shrinking at an accelerating rate.)

This thread got me back to researching the Vikings and by pursuing tangents, resulted in a purchase.

I have a book on Viking Navigation and a Sunstone coming.

The Vikings preferred Frankish swords over Scandinavian ones. Frankish swords were considered better quality. It was illegal to sell weapons to the infidels, but there are quite a lot of Frankish weapons found in Norse graves. I doubt they were all spoils of war. Free enterprise was old already then. :)

Those looks like boats that are factory built, but still. You could buy a decent car for the same price! 😳

If you like Viking history and sailing....this book is for you.

I bought it and a Sunstone (Icelandic Spar) (plus a nice old coin with a Viking Long boat on it  :D) to investigate Viking Open Sea Navigation. And what a fascinating book!! Part history, part science part epic field investigation, it's a thorough study on Nordic, Dark Age navigation written in an easily readable style. I was surprised to find out that the Sunstone, which works on the principle of polarization, was accurate to 1 degree in locating the Sun's true position. The book also has chapters on nighttime Celestial Navigation and other Viking techniques as well. Add historical commentary, boat construction, maps, sea routes, deciphering Sagas and the author out on the sea in a Viking boat testing it all.

All this from a quick scan and some light reading on subjects/chapters that caught my interest. It gets a  :2tu: from me!!!
