Quick DIY: Paracord Thumb Stud
on: October 15, 2016, 10:51:00 PM
Quick process of how I wrap the thumb holes on the Leatherman Tools.

Start-Off with Micro cord. I've tried the other sizes but this tends to work best, super cheap its really useful  around the house. Any color works. I tend to use Orange on the Serrated Blade and Green on the Straight Blade.

Obviously I can feel which blade I'm deploying when the tool comes out of my pocket, but if I ask someone else to open the knife, I can just reference a color.

Pinch the end in the tool. Leave an inch or so of tag beyond the hole.  Cut off 6-8"
The hard part, "ya loop it, ya swoop it, ya pull"

This is the EXACT same process used to Whip the end of a rope.

Notice the loop held down with the chrome plier tips, keep this laying down against the blade while you wrap
Wrap until your satisfied with the size of the stud, I stick with 5 or so.

Run the tag end through the loop you've been holding against the blade.

Keep the cord semi tight as you wrap, don't let the cord cross eachother otherwise it will be a mess. Grab both running ends and pull them tight, I use vice grips and really give them a tug. Trim the ends. Leave some fluff

**At this step I slide the knot to the forward part of the hole. It's much more comfortable to push the blade out here versus closer to the pivot.

Fused. Green one turned out neater IMO.

The smallest dab of super glue holds the knot from sliding, also holds the ends better.

Typically every month I run a lighter flame down the knot to eat all the threads that have frayed from pocket carry.

This wrap has been on my Surge for a year, still tight too!

Very cool idea, I'm going to give that a go tomorrow using some Kevlar cord I've got knocking around and still haven't found a use for yet  :tu:

Here's another way, having the ends inside of the coil.

Lots of 3D printed options on the market now, but I like the touch of the paracord. Easy replacement and beyond cheap

Good job showing how to wrap a thumbhokld.
Most of my multi tools are done this way.
I glad that you mentioned the super glue fix.
Works great and lasts for years.

Here's one that I did with stitching awl cord, and hardened with super glue.

That looks nice and tidy.  I'll be looking at all my knives now to see which ones would look good with a paracord thumb stud.   :D

Here's the one that I use with the stitching awl cord.
It leaves a raised portion on the knot itself.
