Swapping out just one tool on 91mm SAK
on: October 25, 2016, 06:37:50 PM
I have a mangled bottle cap lifter on a Craftsman.

I was thinking about drilling off the bushing on just the one pin for the cap lifter, on the cap lifter side, leaving the knife together, and then pushing the old pin out just far enough to release the cap lifter...

Then insert the replacement cap lifter and insert the new pin through that side, pushing out the old pin as I slide the new one in...

The idea is that none of the tools will pop out...since they are thick enough to always have a bit of the old or new pin keeping them in place.

Trying to avoid complete disassembly to replace just one tool.

Any tips?

Honestly, that's exactly the best way to do it. And even if a tool pops out of place, just use a longer, thin screwdriver to pry the spring down, and pop the implement back into place.

Also, before you insert the new pin, file down the end so that it forms a small taper, almost a cone shape. this will make it easier to put into the SAK. I say go for it!

It's doable, (I've done it) but there is equal measures of luck and skill involved.

I did it when I replaced the smal blade with the in-line awl on my Woodsman and it was the easiest mod I've ever done. I was almost suspicious because I didn't have to swear, throw anything or storm out in a huff, and I used my indoor voice for the whole time!

Give it a go and I'm sure it will go smashingly.  :salute:

If it goes smoothly I'll swear with delight.
