@PitCarver: :iagree: on inexpensive (yet I would like to have a nice Seiko or Citizen Eco-Drive). Where did you find your new watch?

My graduation gift from my parents was a nice Seiko that lasted quite a while, till it died.   When I was put out to pasture, and retired, I treated myself to a pricey Citizen.  It too lasted a while before it finally died.
Seems that both of those high end watches had crap crystals that picked up any scratch they could.
In between those I had several Casio's. This was before the current lines of tough watches.

This new one was/is a Walmart buy that actually costs less than taking it to Batteries Plus  to have the battery replaced.  They generally last me 2 to 3 years before it needs replacement and I haven't been able to scratch the crystal on one yet.

I had to look up SKMEI.  Maybe they have them at my local W-Mart.  I like the looks of the thing.  I remember a post by one of our members who said when his G-Shock battery died, he threw the watch away.  I thought about discarding my ancient Casio when the battery got very weak, but went ahead and put a battery in myself.
The Chinese factories need some help with naming their products.  They have a tendency to put some oddball name that nobody knows how to pronounce.  Bad marketing.  SKMEI?  Ruike?  Roo-icky... Rook... Rake?
I think I will look for a SKMEI next trip out.  Maybe one day I will find a G-Shock somewhere.  Maybe one with a weak battery someone just threw out.
Best wishes.  G

It's not exactly vintage but it does go back, it's AE-1200: https://www.casio.com/us/watches/casio/about/ae-1200/ --what they don't mention there on the Casio site is it's unofficial nickname, Casio Royale. ;)

My watch life is very boring since getting a Samsung Galaxy 4 Classic, and my glorious G-Shocks, Seikos, etc. remain untouched.  There is just too much functionality with a smart watch to ever go back to Downton Abbey watches.

I am also in that category.  I'll bust out one of the nice watches for an event, or occasionally because I feel like it, but I almost always just put on my Galaxy S3 Frontier.

Given how much I like having a smart watch I should probably invest in a nicer/newer one, but this one is a bit special too- my mother ordered this one about a month before she passed, and so on top of being useful, I have an additional attachment to it.

I had another, slightly older S3 as well, but a coworker broke his smart watch so I gave him mine, and I started wearing my Mom's.

Not many people inherit brand new smart tech from their 80 year old parents!   :D

:hatsoff: If they made one with a negative display, I'd be tempted...

I have one watch with a negative display- my G Shock GA-100 and I'll never get another.  The readout is almost impossible to read during the day and I do very few night operations these days.  IMHO the negative display looks cool (when you can see it) but is ultimately quite useless.

The metal square G Shocks with negative display have a better LCD that is more legible, and I find mine good in most angles and lighting conditions. However they are also hella expensive compared to the resin versions, you would have to be borderline deranged to buy one.

I have very little problem reading a negative display. Sure, a positive display is easier to read. By the time it is significantly so, the light will be so dim that I'll fire off the backlight regardless of display type. My vision would have to deteriorate markedly before I'd buy another watch with a positive display or a light dial.

I mean, that explains a lot!   :pok:

Still, it's good to know that not all negative displays are bad.  I really like the GA-100 but it's only useful IMHO because that hands are easy to see.

Since we’re covering negative displays, here’s my other:

The display looks great there, and it is when you have the right angle, but it’s pretty bad if you don’t. I still like wearing it though as I think it looks cool. And the incredibly robust bracelet is a marvel of German engineering.

Lately I've been wearing the GD-400-1 kinda regularly. Here it is pretty much directly under the entry-way light.
