Filter coffee..... without filters
on: January 06, 2017, 12:24:13 AM
A friend gifted me a hamper for Christmas with assorted treats and a few beers. In there was also a 250g pack of ground filter coffee. I don't drink coffee often, and when I do, it's instant coffee.

Seems a shame letting this go to waste, particularly as it was a gift. I feel as though I ought to at least try it even if I don't use it all, but of course I don't have a press, or filters, or any inclination to buy anything that'll never be used again.

Thoughts? Any simple hacks without buying anything or turning any of my socks brown?  :D

Well, you could make what's called "cowboy coffee" around here.  Stir coffee grounds into just-below-boiling water, let sit for 4 minutes, then pour a small amount of cold water onto the floating coffee grounds.  Another minute or two and the grounds should settle into the bottom.  Pour into a mug leaving the grounds behind.  This is similar to Turkish coffee I believe.

I've used a couple paper towels with ground coffee  in a funnel. Pour boiling water over the grounds. Having the funnel over your cup.

I don't drink coffee at all, but Megan does and the only suggestions she has are the ones mentioned above.

What they said in video format.

edit: You could also use a sock as a filter or some other form of underwear for more complex notes.

You mean Greek coffee?

I suggest you just use a small fine sieve the type that fits over a cup. Just put the sieve on the cup, put some coffee in it and pour the hot water through it, slowly.

You must have a small sieve somewhere...

I had the same problem last year, when i too was gifted ground coffee and had no coffee maker... I used a sieve.
I also bought a cheap French press, a few months later, for occasional use, in the winter.

Yep, I like my coffee without impurities. Hot and black. I do the same as you. Eat or spit. I call coffee that has grounds in it crunchy coffee.
The way Mors makes coffee is how I learned to mack it years again and still make it that way out in the sticks. Mucka muck chuck!

Looks like everyone has the methods covered, but I will add a +1 to the fact that the only correct way to drink coffee is black!

Went to starbucks with my wife yesterday.  She ordered some kind of latte with extra shots of espresso and pumps of flavoring, even specified the temperature.  Recited a dissertation to order a drink.  I ordered a "grande dark roast".  Guess which one they got wrong...

I do agree that coffee should be black, right up until the point I pour smurfloads of milk in it. How people can drink it black is beyond me.

Anyway, I've just cooked up a brew to give it a whirl. I used one on my small camping pots on the stove, cooked it up in the pot with sugar, and poured it into a large mug already laden with milk. It's a bit of a palaver when you're used to making tea with a teabag in a mug, but it worked out quite well for a first effort. I might tweak the method slightly next time, but it's heading for the gullet and not down the drain, so I reckon that makes it a success

Congrats, glad to hear it!  Yeah, not quick and easy.  But I guess no one would buy coffee makers otherwise  :)  Or you run into the weird folks that have coffee makers, but spend a half an hour with a kettle and measuring for a pour over instead

Seconds out - round two.....

Cooked up enough for a 1 pint mug. Three level-ish spoons of ground coffee, and same of sugar. One full mug of cold water. Boil and simmer for a minute, leave to settle with lid on, then pour over an inch of milk in the bottom of the mug - leaves just enough liquid in the pan so you won't pour the sludge at the bottom.

Aye, that'll do for me  :)

Thanks for the insights folks

I like my coffee like I like my women.

Slow roasted, ground into a fine powder, boiled in water and served in a foam cup.

My initial advice would be "Get some variety of coffee making device" (if you drink a lot of coffee) the cost-per-cup becomes quite agreeable.

I'll one up your coffee dickery when it comes to ordering - Instead of a "double shot" ask for a "quadruple ristretto" (4 x 1/2 Shots - instead them just putting your mug under a double-basket, make them make 4 shots, in single baskets...)

If you really want to rustle their jimmies, get them to make it with Decaf

How about using a dripper like a gent?  >:D Google for "Vietnamese Coffee Filter"

I am also among those drinking straight black coffee. Just like not adding sauce to fine steak, you don't add sweetener, milk... to good coffee.  :salute:

And for the record, I use an ancient percolator from the 1960's at home. Got it at a garage sale around 1995 for $2. Cleaned it up, and that thing will make a brew so potent Pablo Escobar would be proud of the kick it gives ya...... ::)
