Is it a multitool or not?
on: October 13, 2008, 12:54:21 AM
I recently got this little doodad from our good buddy HawkChucker during the Maine trip.  Looking at it, it really is just as messed up as it appears to be!

To be honest, I think it qualifies, at least on the most basic level, as it functions as a knife, bottle opener, and if some manufacturers are to be believed, a lanyard ring that qualifies as a third function.

I would seriously doubt it's use as the blade is less than an inch long, and the ergonomics are non existent, the bottle opener gives you little to no leverage to open a bottle, and well, I think the lanyard ring is very lanyard ring-y...  I am surprised Buck didn't make this one of those spring clip/carabiner type knives, but I guess that would have skyrocketed the price to well over $12...

Looks like a type of knife/opener thing you see at some gas stations near the register...I'm sure the quality is way better, but the design itself is bad.

I kind of like it - but declined to buy one, so that tells me something.

Is it a multi? I guess it has to be, but there are multis, and then there are multis...

I used to come here a lot.

It may be multi-function, but its still way more a "knife" than it is a "tool"

Buck has come up with some innovations and great ideas in the past.....this isn't one of them. They would've been better off to have revived their partnership with Wenger.

I had one for years, and actually liked it alot.  I never had a problem opening bottles with it.  Not a Vic bottle opener, but worked nontheless.  The knife I kept really sharp and came in really handy at times.  Doesn't need to be big to be handy.  Pretty sturdy design.  Multitool?  Not sure about that.  Knife?  Not sure about that either.  I think your original term worked best.  It is a great little doodad to have with you.  And as far as doodads go, it is one of the best.

Pretty much everything in existence has the added function of being a bottle opener. Heck, I could even open a bottle with this keyboard I am typing on...  :drink:

IMHO, the only this that SHOULD be called a Multitool is a plier-based tool only.

A knife is a tool and the addition of a bottle opener makes it a multi-tool, IMO.  I like this little Buck, it's really handy especially when carried on the outside of a Murse. The price is right too, around $15 US just about everywhere.

Third option. I own one of these. Played around with it for a day, dropped it. Now the blade is stiff to open.

But that doesn't matter, I don't carry it. :D

Oh no.  Definitions.

Wait a begoshdurned moment, is a SAK a multitool ??   I thought for the purposes of this forum only plier-ish MTs were considered true MTs.   Everything else is either a SAK or just a "K".  Unless it's a sword or tomahawk, of course.  Or a flashlight.  But what if it's SAK-like but not S and has a flashlight but no plier-ish thingy??  Ouch, my hair hurts and I've confused myself.  :ahhh

But seriously - the reason I ask is that I EDC a Gerber Nautilus for many years, and in fact still do - even though I now also EDC a LM Surge and a Streamlight bimode flashlight, along with a bunch of other "stuff".

I was actually thinking of submitting a review of the Nautilus, as mine has been in the field for quite a while and I have a lot of use and carry time with it.  However, I got the impression that it isn't a MT, even though it has can opener, phillips and flat bladed screwdrivers, a folding blade, LED multimode illumination, and scissors.  And it certainly isn't an SAK or even the same concept as an SAK. So?

So do I write a review?  I'd love to contribute.  But where would it go, even if my fellow boardmembers found it worthy?

And to further additionally extra complicate this matter some more, please see my new post "An Odd MT-like Thing From My Collection" (in this same forum section) where you might see a rare elusive something or other that is very MT-like but SAK-like as well.   ;)

Long ago I actually checked the forum FAQ for the answer to "What is a Multitool?" but never found it.  I guess it's like that thing where you can't define pornography, but you know it when you see it.  Not that I'm admitting to even owning a pornograph ...

Is it too big to be a curious Key-Fob?

It is indeed a multitool and any reviews are greatly appreciated.  :)  We have a review section for this very thing.

We actually have a review of the Naurilus already http://www.multitool.org/gerber/3.5-to-4.5-inches/gerber-nautilus.html but it is always great to have another persons opinion.

It's not grey, perhaps an off shade of black.

I do sort of like it, however I thought of it more as a "cute" item than not... but the ergonomics ruined it for me as a user.

And bottle openers don't count as a function!
