The multi-poon?
on: October 16, 2008, 03:48:31 AM
Anybody have one of these?

http://www.mec.ca/Products/product_detail.jsp?PRODUCT%3C%3Eprd_id=845524441774463&FOLDER%3C%3Efolder_id=2534374302696413&bmUID=1224121555861

Made of titanium too, I'm going there tomorrow and maybe I'll pick one up.

Titanium Poon ?!?    It does sound interesting...

" Put it on a cord around your neck for ultra-minimalist summit assaults or lightweight backpacking trips. "

Yeah, I'm gonna forgo all the other gear.  Just need a poon.

" A strange conversation piece at parties. "

Now that I believe, especially hanging from your paracord neck lanyard.

" Time tested spoon shape for convenient food consumption. "

LOL.   The ice-pick and prybar shaped beta versions didn't get past the focus groups.

" Precision-machined titanium. "

Not at $16 CDN.   It might be precision STAMPED titanium.  I doubt it's 6AL-4V, or it's incredibly thin.  The material value alone approaches the retail price.  Maybe it's only titanium colored ?   ::)

Sorry, couldn't resist-

Supposely it goes with their stoves (MSR) and you can do adjustment and stuff on field.

Yes, that's correct. It would really only be useful if you had an MSR stove, then you wouldn't need to carry the separate wrench included in the field service kit.

OK, I am going to have to ask.  Why does it matter so much to you that everything you own comes from America?  Have you had bad experiences from imported tools?

Please don't take this as a dig, I am just trying to find out why it means so much to you.  :)

Although I have had bad experiences with imported (Chinese) tools the reason I buy American is to support American manufacturing like One Lame Frog said. Also I don't always buy American I also buy stuff made in Canada, South Africa, England, France, Germany, Italy, Ireland, Switzerland, Finland, Russia and, occasionally Japan.

Would you be interested in buying some stock from Nigeria that will worth hundreds times of what you shall pay for them as soon as my rich uncle pass away and entrust me his billion dollar inheritance?

... it's not a part of China.

*sighs*

ROC refers to Taiwan and some territories around it, they split off from China a while ago and never abolished the old ROC name.

It's democratic by the way. And I've not seen many ethical business questions related to them. I don't know where you're coming from.

Well, yeah, if you call that democratic, common occurance in their parliament btw. It was never split, only one party wants so, the other doesn't.

Not interested in geo-political mud slinging, that's for sure.

I buy Australian.

O' course, 50% of australian owned manufacturers use chinese labour, but what can you do eh.

TBH I could not care less where my products are made as I see that as no indication what so ever as to the quality of the product.  If the quality is good (or what I am expecting for the price I am paying) then I would buy it regardless of it's origin.

Got to agree with Ben here. I got a Fenix light the other day, and if it's any way inferior to a mag-lite - then it's subtle enough for me not to be able to tell! Just looking around my desk here, and I can see USB card readers, chinese made leatherman sheath, wire strippers, a multi-meter, a stapler etc....

Without Chinese manufactured goods, I'd be pretty screwed.

But, Nomad and jzmtl's posts were by far the best on this thread so far :D

I used to come here a lot.

I am with Ben and Dave on this one. I own a ton of Chinese made items and everything from China isn't bad quality. Have you ever tried a Fenix light? They beat the snot out of the American made Mag Lites. BTW, I guarantee that you have a ton of Chinese made items in your household, everybody does!

Well, I was thinking he was more concerned with the ethical side of manufacturing, and I was just pointing out that Taiwan doesn't share these problems...

jzml, I said democratic, nothing there implies a system of parties. Just a democracy. I don't care if their political system mirrors America, just that it is republic or democratic in nature.

And I agree with the others, China can produce quality stuff as long as some greedy Chinese thief isn't heading the operation. As long as companies keep good quality control and tight reins on the manufacturing process I'm willing to buy.

Yes I know, but it's funny thou, I can't think of any other parliment that often ends up in fist fights.  :D

Funny you said that, consider the product are usually made to to spec of the importers, who aren't Chinese most of the time. Blame the people who ordered the cheap crap, not the people who makes them according to the order. But we are way off topic now.
