Well this should be interesting, but the little guy wants to join the Boy Scouts!

His best friend is one and is going on a week long trip this upcoming weekend, so of course the little guy wants to go, but of course there's all that stuff that needs to be taken care of, along with dues for the trip,($350 alone) so we spoke with the leader or den mother, what ever their called. We explained our situation on how we can't afford everything, so she said to have him write a letter and she will see what she could do..

Well, she got back to us a couple days later and said someone donated and got all dues paid for the year, also stuff he will need, a mess kit, a cot, and other stuff! So I took him downstairs to find some junk, gave him an old military backpack, he didn't want the metal frame so I left that off, also gave him one of my canteens, it has the metal cup along with the stove that wraps around it, and also the insulated wrap that holds everything, started putting a travel kit together, picked out a flashlight, I just don't know what they need for the trip, waiting for the list.. I must say he ain't taking his sak! That with the custom stuff I did and sheath is like $100, and I'm not letting him lose it! If he is allowed to take one I gotta see what I can find as a knife he can ruin or lose, just what, kinda wish I had one of those imitations pieces of junk, or a old used one. I just can't wait to see what this list is going to have for what he needs, but I know he's pumped, he's already set to tent partners with his best friend, he's also put in for what he wants to do, shotgun, canoe, hiking, fishing, and reptile amphibian study!

I just can't wait to see him with his special shirt with yellow neck thingy, :D and then when he comes home that thing that they wear across with little patches :D
Idk who's more thrilled him or me, lol.. thus why I had to say something on here! Of course if and when I'll have to post pics, lol.. can't wait!

Congrats to him.  Joining the scouts sounds like an expensive process nowadays. It's a far cry from the 50p a week I paid when I went waaaaaay back when I were a lad.

He's signed up for it, and it went by the one in charge! So I guess we'll see, heck I'm jealous on half the things they got going, night time zip lining, come on!

I'd say so, we've wanted to put him in for years but never could afford it, we just felt so bad but it's freaking expensive! This should be sooo good for him, just to get him off of that freaking computer, tablet, or tv that he's on all day! Heck back in my day I don't remember having good cable, just cartoons early sat and sun, then out to have fun, get the guys gathered up and either get on the bikes or head into the woods to explore and put that old sak to use! Maybe parent pending take a tent up and crash the night, build a little fire and put some hotdogs on, and of course marshmallows!

That has certainly changed from my time in the Scouts. I got kicked out twice for stating that we could be learning something useful instead of learning songs and designing a troop flag (like knots, setting up tents...)

This place is huge, I don't think it's just his troop going, and I'm sure there's certain things like coloring or bible to make some kids more comfortable..

As far as the one in charge of his troop, lol, the wife(that's my wife) got booted out of a Facebook page from her because of something, she soooo didn't want to have to contact her to get info about him joining, yet after she did she did all this!!

My son and I did one of those campouts a few years ago. It sound like a district campout at probably the local boy scout camp. There is always a lot to do! My son did archery, fishing, hiking, and BB guns (no shotguns, but still taught the same safety principles) then there was also plenty of time for the boys to just play and hang out with each other. There was even a flag retirement ceremony as well, which was cool for him to see. So, if MP's son has half the fun we did, he will have a blast!

He went to something like this a few years back with his old school, not Boy Scouts, and he had a blast, especially since a bunch of his best friends were there! But this place is bigger and to do with the Boy Scouts, so I'm sure he's going to have fun, heck I so wish I could go just to watch!

I used to go to something like it when I was his age, one of my mothers employers at the time knew about it and put me in every summer, it wasn't the "Boy Scouts" but it was cool, my grandfather gave me his huge military duffle bag to toss everything in, I don't remember much besides going out in a canoe and finding frog eggs one year and almost tipping the canoe over, that and we didn't camp in a tent but had bunk houses..

I'm sure he will, I can't wait to see all the goodies he brings home, heck I might have to see about borrowing a tent or maybe getting one so we can pitch in the back yard for a few nights and maybe do some father son bonding, just can't have a fire, knowing my luck I'll get yelled at for just pitching tent..

If it's ok with the Mrs, I see Wal Mart has a lot of 3 man tents for $50 and under.  I'd happily send you $25 to help cover the cost of one if you are serious about camping with the boy.  Yeah, they may not be the toughest or best tents out there, but they should be more than adequate for camping in the yard.

https://www.walmart.com/browse/sports-outdoors/tents-accessories/4125_546956_4128_887708?cat_id=4125_546956_4128_887708&facet=maximum_occupancy_tents%3A3+Person%7C%7Cprice%3A%2425+-+%2450#searchProductResult

I went with 3 man tents because I always find they are rated for ultra tiny "men."

Send me a PM if you are interested.
