Wow..would like to hear the story behind that one!

The good part is with a SOG in that condition...you can sell the impliments or but a new head!  I think the heads are like $12-$15 not sure..

SOG insists they do not sell heads or handles separately.

My mistake..I always thought they sold the heads..

I wonder what would the result would be if someone were to just send a busted plier head in for warranty work

I've piece mealed out a couple of broken or banged up SOG's for parts and got more than enough money to buy a new replacement.

Just bought a NIB S60 for $37 delivered. Could probably get:  12 implements @  $4 , 2 handles @ $5, head for $12 = $70, sooo the way I look at it pieces of the pie are worth more than the whole. That’s why you'll never lose money owning an auto salvage yard. There are always people looking for spare parts whether it be cars, MT's, etc.
Why do I carry a 45 ?
Because they don't make a 46 !

Wouldn't this be covered by the warrantee?

I've also seen a BO Wave breaking up like that. Up to now, I blamed the way the LM pliers open (as in "why do newer Swisstools open the other way around?"), but SOGs already had the right "orientation" in their plier heads.

On the other hand, I've never seen a non-BO tool break. Could it be that the anodizing/coating procedure somehow alters the hardness of the steel? I already know that a coating is just a... ummm... coating, but since some coating methods require heating the coated surface, it still is not clear to me whether such a procedure is safe for the tool...

Just a rant...

If you clamp down on something and twist it's not that hard to break MT's plier head, since they are relatively small and made of stainless steel not tool steel.

Nope all 420 stainless (except better steel knife blades). I don't know any MT that's made of tool steel.

If SOG produced a tool steel plier head you could retrofit onto your existing Powerlock I'd buy it!

I've bent my Powerlocks' jaws slightly at the pivot point while pulling (big) staples, but they instantly went back into place.  Maybe that's a good aspect of using stainless over a harder steel.

I broke my BO powerlock in the exact same way just loosening a tight bolt. It took a fair amount of force but I've worked my SURGE harder without doing any damage at all.

I didn't know that!  I thought the pliers were made out of tool steel and the rest out of 420.  Huh, I learn something new everyday.  Thanks! :)

It would be nice if SOG sold replacement plier heads...  Until then, our only other option is to buy those MT lots on eBay that may have some spare SOG parts.  I've seen a few spare powerlock plier heads floating around eBay before.

I guess that wont be easy.

I agree, I'd like to get a black oxide 2.0 Powerlock head to install in my "old" Powerlock body...

Regarding damaged plier heads,  Sog's website states you can send in your multi-tool and get the head replaced free of charge or you can purchase a replacement plier head for $5.00 and replace it yourself.  I'm sure you'd have to send in the damage head in order to get the replacement for such a low price.  Not sure if anyone has tried this yet.

You also have to pay for shipping to your door. I haven't used it, but it's great how you can do this with SOGs!!!
