Horses for courses, I chop wood, the I cut paper.....I made myself a good knife........not meant for cutting apples AT ALL!

Put a lanyard in that top front hole, dare say you could chop forever  :salute:

(Image removed from quote.)

You should see at my back door, wood chips, shavings everywhere, just a general mess.  I've been compulsively testing this knife, chopped some rotten oranges which slightly stained the blade, the only excuse I need to cold blue the blade....I know it's not durable but I do love the finish  8)
Also started with a plastic sheath yesterday, did the basic molding and I mean to have it covered in leather and ready for next weekend.
I did a flat grind on this blade and the convexed the bevels on a slack belt, partly to hide some mistakes.
Best part for me is I realised the knife cuts (wood at least) much better than the D6 hollow ground knife I made on a course.........and the D6 was sharper without a doubt....

I've now battoned with it, chopped into some knots and various other abuses, and I'm extremely happy with the heat treat as well.
Only part I'm not happy with is I did the heat treat 3 times, and I have no way to actually measure what I'm dealing with, it was luck and is not repeatable.

I bought two sheets of Kydex, several years ago,for a special project but I never used them.

They're in the shop, stored in some forgotten location.LOL.

The Kydex is a different story, but the first plastic I had (and used for this knife's sheath) is a weak alternative, but I think the results are excellent when I cover it with leather......

I've got a real battle going with myself on the topic of leather work and sheaths, I know I should put in the effort to learn, but that's going to mean more money and more tools.......and my sub-conscience is fighting me.....

I'm going to struggle to make 10 knives a year, the plastic is 2 days of after work work to get done.....will stick with that for now.

Just got this Russell Thistle Top in, 1890s I'm thinking. I have an inquiry in on the tang stamp to a guy who knows about these knives. I became interested in Russell knives through a contact I met at the local flea market. They were the preferred knife of mountain men and Western expansion, not this particular style but Green River Works knives from Greenfield, MA.

That's beautiful PD!!!!!  I have Green River knives from the 70's and 80's but nothing that old or ornate.

We need a Green River thread!  :tu:
