Day 05....and Day 00:

I quit.

Gary, Alan, and NuclearRamen got me all agitated over not having scissors. And, right now, it just so happens that some of the things I'm doing are more amenable to scissors work. And I kept seeing these Outriders pop up here. So I got one.

Let me review, after a brief 5 days, my OHT:

(Image removed from quote.)

This is simply a fabulous knife. The OHT is big, but still rides nicely in the pocket. While the main blade can be opened with either hand, it's not a blade that deploys quickly or easily. But, still, it can be opened using just one hand. The main blade locks open with a liner lock, and the large driver/cap lifter does as well. The accessory tools (saw, can opener, cap lifter, Phillips, Awl) awl work well. I've never really cranked on the drivers, but for light driver tasks they work nicely. I should point out that the Phillips is a #2 sized Phillips driver.

Most importantly, the OHT just feels great in my hand. It feels like it has been designed for work, and I like that. My one criticism, and a small one at that, is that the blade is rounded and not quite as pointy as I'd like. Not a big deal, just a bit odd. Otherwise, this is a fabulous knife.

For a knife without scissors.

My new Outrider arrived today and I'm pretty stoked. If the OHT is a Hiker on steroids, the Outrider is a beefed-up Huntsman. It has scissors. I like scissors. Now I've got scissors.

I'm switching from my OHT to the Outrider. I feel a little badly switching horses in midstream, but I really want to give the chunky Outrider a 30-day trial. I have some doubts that I'll be happy carrying such a big knife for 30-days. I think the OHT has already proven to be an easy carry for me. I've shied away from the 4-layer Outrider in the past because of it's size. However, I want to see if the Outrider will work for me; a 30-day challenge seems like a perfect test. And I gave in to those scissors.

I'll pick up tomorrow, resetting my clock back to Day 01, and do a little more comparison. Then, it's off for a 30-day Outrider challenge. Already the Outrider has come in handy......

(Image removed from quote.)
Wish there was a OH version! Our is there?

Day 6: late post, been out collecting whittling materials! No action pic though.

Day 01:

With the Huntsman, one gets an extra small blade and that awlsome hook. No small blade or hook, but the Outrider does have an inline Phillips driver. And here I’m a bit confused. The Spirit provides a Phillips that’ll work for #1 or #2 Phillips head, the OHT has a #2 Phillips. the Outrider’s Phillips seems suited for #1 heads only. Maybe some of you Outrider owners have had different experiences.
My Workchamp has 2 phillips: a #1 and a #2.  The Outrider only has a #1. Victorinox probably figured you could use the can opener for a #2.

Good point. Hmmmm....

The other interesting thing about the Outrider is that the cap lifter/large driver is smaller and less robust than the one in the OHT or a 93mm Soldier. It's a standard 91mm cap lifter, as one would find in the Huntsman. I'm guessing the engineers wanted to keep the Outrider as slim as possible.

Powernoodle Day 7

Boeshield T-9 is my favorite lube for SAKs and MTs.  When it evaporates, it leaves behind a smooth, clean, waxy film that protects and lubricates.

Day 7

Getting ready for seven days on my belt, the Outrider seems to lose size when it slips into the sheath

Day 01:

Some of you guys are already carrying the Outrider, but I thought I’d restart my 30-day challenge with a few thoughts.

my first SAK ever was an outrider (got to have the largest one in the display, a kid's brain logic) and it did all I needed to for 4 years every single day.
I carried loose in the pocket (had no belt, no keychain, no phone, no flashlight...I was a kid!  :ahhh) and it was a brick for a tiny person like me, but I knew no other as I had never carried a knife before.

I'm sure it'll do everything reasonable for the challenge, and I hope you enjoy it as  much as I did!  :salute:
I abused that poor thing  :P and it ended up wasted after the 4 years, when I lost it on a road trip, but I' sure it'd have kicked for another 4 years just fine

Day 5:

Hercules is shown here keeping company to another Patriot... Sounds like they're planning a revolution :D

More seriously, been scraping stuff with the flat head as well as inserting server rack mount screw bracket thingies. Some Philips screws were tightened and the pliers used to bend little wire thingies. Again, can't take pictures in the server rooms so you'll have to settle for daylight and no dust. (sorry, these are the same pics as the other thread...)

Day 7 -- Fireman, Hunter, Helmsman

Schrönogaming up the carry.

Clear blue skies and no wind at all caused us not to notice the subzero temperatures while pruning trees again today. There was no  lack of stuff in my pockets, the pics show only part of it, but only the Opinels got some use.

Outrider Day 02:

I was out shoveling snow today (yes, again) and carried the Outrider in my pocket. Initially, with all the bending, lifting, twisting, and such, I did notice that the SAK would fall sideways in my pocket and then press into my leg. That bugged me at first and I started thinking about finding a sheath for the Outrider. But the job needed to get done and I just laid into the snow. By the time I was finished, I forgot the Outrider was there.

More snow in the forecast and I'm already sore from all this shoveling. So, yes, I got me the Snow Shoveler's Blues.

What's a man to do?

"Build a guitar!"

I got me a cigar box guitar kit. It was mostly assembled (I thought it was just going to be parts), so not much work was required. Used the Outrider to clean out and open the holes in the string saddle before fitting the string guides in place:

Before:

After:

The twisty tuning things were pre-installed, but the SAK Phillips tightened them up a bit:

Nut, bridge, and strings in place. So now I have an "Axe", right? And that's a Multitool!

(I thought I had the appropriate brass screws to fix the sticker in place, but, no. I'll rely on the adhesive until I can get some good screws.)

Used the Skeletool to snip the excess strings--I was tempted to try the Vic scissors to do this, but I'm ready to trash my scissors yet.  :-[

So, here's my new guitar:

I tried to use the Outrider as a slide, but I think the included glass slide works better in my clumsy hands.

Just lunch pizza and a Mexican Coke was no match for the Trekker's bottle opener.

For those of you who arent familiar with it; Coke US switched to running corn syrup in its recipe after the New Coke debacle of the 80s. The Mexican label however still use sugar. Those of us in the Southwest can get the glass bottle at pretty much every gas station and grocery. Real sugar Coke is often only sold as a specialty limited availability item for the rest of the country.
