Cold Steel Pocket Bushman
on: November 12, 2008, 05:03:19 AM
I was just trolling around looking at folders and the Cold Steel Pocket Bushman caught my eye...it's similar in design to the Douk Douk that I recently got.  This Bushman is plain ol' 440 stainless steel, but that's reflected in the low price of about $25.  Blade is 4.5" long!!

Anyone own one?  Any thoughts on this thing?

The pocket clip looks very short, does your Douk Douk has the same clip? I'm in a small (under 3) edc folder market as well choices choices.

No clip at all on the Douk...just a bail for a lanyard.  The Douk Douk is probably the simplist folder ever.  Neither are under 3" though if that's what you're looking for...the Bushman is huge!

Wow nvm the clip comment heh this thing is huge. Rambo can use it in the next movie big. Yeah I'm looking for something smaller, but it's nice to see a quality company produce inexpensive knives.

I own one, but due to it's huge size I have not had a chance to use it yet. Plan on making a trip into the woods to do some heavy duty work to see what it can handle. I keep meaning to go but like keeps getting in the way  :-\ I can show some pics if you want, in hand and stuff.

Great link!

Since the locking mechanism is essentially "removable"...can this monster be legally carried in the UK? :D

LOL. No, even without a lock it is still a MONSTER of a blade and so much to big for legal EDC.  A cutting edge of 3" or less for us. ::)

It would be illegal to carry concealed here (in Missouri).  So, I would have to clip it to my belt or something so that it could be seen.

So by putting it in a pocket out of sight it would be concidered concealed?  But by carring it openly it's fine?

That's an interesting law isn't it?  I can carry a 4" fixed blade in a sheath on my belt, but I can't carry a 4" bladed knife in my pocket.  It would then be considered a concealed weapon.

Same goes with handguns here.  In Missouri, it is legal for a legal handgun owner to openly carry a handgun in a holster on his side, as long as there are no local (county, city) laws against it.  However, it is illegal to carry a concealed handgun anywhere in the state unless you are licensed to do so.

You can obtain a concealed carry license for a handgun, but you cannot obtain one for a large concealed knife.

I fail to see what you are gaining by having them on show.  Sure, everyone can see what you have, but people can also see what you don't have and would therefore make some people more vunerable.

I really don't know the reasoning behind it, but I always assumed that it was for the benefit of law enforcement.

Chances are that a person openly carrying a weapon, whatever it may be, is going to abide by the law because he has announced that it is there and he is responsible for it.  Would you expect him to openly carry a weapon if he were planning to commit a crime, or conceal it?

Wouldn't the clip on the knife being visible keep it from being considered concealed?

I bought one of these when they first came out. I was thinking that it would be a perfect upgrade for my Douk Douk with the pocket clip and thumb stud. I was wrong. Completely different creature. It is FAR larger than the Douk (longer and thicker) and the thumb studs (on mine) were completely for show. Nobody that tried it could open it with the studs. I was very disappointed in it, not for the quality but for being what it was rather than what I wanted it to be and thus sold it. I may pick up another though, because the more I think and read about it, the more it seems like it would make a good replacement for a Mora or any medium sized lightish duty fixed blade in toolboxes, survival kits, etc.

Do you remember if the thumbstuds were easily removable?

I agree with your final thought there about a sturdy survival knife type thing...mt Waved Delica is all I need right now for an FAST deployment EDC knife, but this Bushman folder looks like a nice outdoors/beater folder.
