Which tool with scissors would you choose?
on: March 12, 2018, 09:31:46 PM

Hello everyone  I missed you!

My son studies in Paris for a semester, but he forgot to take a SAK with him. He told me he needed a SAK with scissors. I sent him this photo and he made his choice which is already at his service in the City of Light.

Which one do you think he choose?

Can't imagine much need for a saw as a student in Paris so I'd pick the mountaineer. :salute:

Mountaineer. Gotta have a corkscrew.

 :imws:

But if he's anything like his Dad, it'll be the SwissChamp.

Mountaineer is an excellent Swiss Army Knife. And all 91mm SAK scissors are great. The Leatherman PSTII scissors are among the best, being used for G1 wave and a slightly different type for the SURGE, but none of those are in this mix.

Unless you need plyers, I choose mountaineer from this group

I have a Champion and I like it a lot. I'm just not a fan of Vic SAK plyers.

If the primary tool needed is scissors, go with the Leatherman S4.

Leatherman scissors are every bit as good as Vic's at light duty or high precision stuff, and VASTLY surpass them on harder tasks.

There's also the issue of weight. The S4 is a nice, lightweight tool. Probably about 2/3 the weight of the Mountaineer.

And the only other tool I'd recommend on the list is the Mountaineer. I deeply dislike the 'bobbing' action from Wenger scissors, eliminating them, and the other tools are too big, IMO, for reasonable day to day carry.

All tools are very nice and functional. I prefer Victorinox scissors because Wenger's serrated don't make such clean cuts and LM's (although good for harder use where one applies more pressure) aren't as precise and pointy (Vic's can "dig" and penetrate).
I see a lot of people like the Mountaineer. This isn't a regular Mountaineer. It has special "gelly" Soft Ruby scales with great cool factor and tactile feedback. I bought it for an EDC some years ago and stopped carrying it when Hiraethus sent me my first and only Alox with scissors. For a 4 layer SAK I find that my next most used tool is a file with a strong point, that's why I bought this SAK and not a Huntsman..

My son chose the Mountaineer, an excellent choice IMHO..

In contrast to what the name makes you believe, it is a great urban carry SAK.

I have a new Leatherman PS4. I really like it, and its scissors. However nice the scissors cut, I just always feel they are a little small, and prefer the 91mm type or the PSTII type. I still like the PS4, and feel like that, paired with a Farmer or Camper II can really take you a long way for very title $ and very little weight.

But I still prefer the Mountaineer (any 91mm) scissors over the PS4.

You could say that they...EDGE...the others out...

Sorry. I HAD to.

I'd go with that Squirt. You don't want to caught with a knife in Paris. The police can be tough in Paris. But what would a student select?  If scissors are the most important tool, then a Vic scissors. I agree that they are better than the Wenger--I have tested both together and Vic cuts better hands down.

Champ is a brick. A fantastic brick, but a brick none-the-less.

I've never been to Paris without a knife. But what doesn't happen in years can happen in a minute.

Just to make sure you understand. He's talking about an S4 not a PS4. PS4 has pliers as the main tool. S4 has scissors (like a Micra). I'd agree that a 91mm SAK has better scissors than a PS$, but they do NOT have better scissors than an S4.

I forgot to say that the Wenger Toolchest belongs to him. It is engraved with my full name and I gave it to him when he was around 16 (I also gave him a SwissLite when he was around 8 years old). But it seems that he prefers Victorinox, just like his dad (Ranger is the only line were preferences are reversed).

They are sold literally everywhere in Paris, so I doubt it.

locking and/or large (finger size) blades are frowned upon and severely discouraged it use in cities.   :P
Rural france has no problems with opis and peasant knives, but don't use a knife in public spaces, street, building or cities in any EU capital, it'll bring serious headaches from the authorities and bad looks from the people.  :o

especially a locking one, or one with a "big" blade   :ahhh

that's from my experience, many other forumites experiences and general consensus on the net about EU cities and blades  :salute:
