Nice shot, G-man.  :tu:

I think the PAD is a nice looking tool with some personality and dash.

Day 13 (continued):

After the discussion with G-man above, I decided to regrind the Can Opener. I used a mill file, diamond sharpener, and sandpaper to create more of an edge on the semicircular cutting edge. This is where the Can Opener does it's work. SOG sharpened (to a limited extent) the straight inner edge. This makes no sense as the inner edge isn't involved in opening a can (although it may be useful for peeling an orange.).

Between this and the file, I get the impression the tools were designed by somebody who had seen a picture of other tools, but has no idea how they are supposed to work. It's like the design is aping some dimly recollected tool set from a lost civilization. Hey, maybe that's where we are these days.

The new can opener now works fairly well. Maybe not SAK efficacy, but it is much improved over the can opener as received. In the photo, the point or tip of the opener looks rounded. This is misleading as the tip is actually pretty sharp. I like the new "shark's tooth" look of this opener now.

Thank you, W!

Very nice, Nix! Maybe, when you inevitably have to send it in for warranty work, SOG can reverse engineer your reprofiled can opener and use the ancient technology to create a more effective one.  :like:

Hello,

We are sending you a replacement clip for your Power Access multi tool.

Thank you,

Why do I get the impression we've had a failure to communicate?

How many PA clips got broken where the automatic response is to send a new clip?
I am seriously LOL'ing here.
If you send a correction email in reply, and they still send you a clip, I am going to die laughing(sorry. I can't help it).

Well, since you ride motorcycles and all, W,  :tu:

The key thing here is that the Can Opener is now cutting the lid, not punching through it. As a result, the cutting is much smoother. Still, little 'bites' are required, but way less effort and the lid isn't getting smashed into the inside of the can.

I have sent SOG (Amanda) a response email. I explained that the PAD doesn't have a clip and asked that they not send me a clip.

I also explained that the wire cutters don't cut fine wire and that the can opener was defective, but that I fixed the can opener issue with a file.

I'm expecting to get a 'replacement' Baton Q4 now.  ::)

so yes they Posted And Delivered a clip and an answer unrelated to your issues, but hey, I never have enough clips! (to mod other tools, add them to my clipless knives like Opinels or Kudus, etc.  :tu:
But yes it's weird and you should write again to make sure they got your request and complain and can act accordingly  :salute:  Let's give Amanda another chance to be either Pardoned, Appraised, Derided or judged again, she might be new to the company and overloaded with customer emails  :ahhh

also you did to your can('t) opener  :) what I do with most of those found in Chinese, cheap and ugly tools, this way they can also double as useful scrapers, gougers or even package openers

hopefully if enough complaints, recommendations and customer reviews show them how a can opener and a file should be made,  ::) they will Pause And Decide to improve these implements on the next run, or batch of tools.
It is true that SOG does take its time to Progress, Advance, Develop and improve their tools but I expect them to do so with their next multitool releases, as they do listen to their public most times in my opinion

Nice one, W!
The awl is one of the things about the PAD that is an improvement over their older models. IMO of course. :)

Day 14:

It has been unusually cold and rainy here for the past few days. Mrs Nix requested a hot lunch, which seemed like a good idea. I had a fresh baguette and, after a quick rummage through the refrigerator, came up with the idea of pizza sandwiches. What's not to love?

I used the PAD's main blade to peel some garlic and the can-opener to open a tin of tomato sauce. This is the exact same can and sauce that I used for my first can-opening attempt. You know, the one where as much sauce ended up on the lid as was left tin the can.

So, how would my modified can-opener fare this attempt?

Hey very nice! The can lid got cut in small increments and the lid didn't get mashed into the sauce.  :tu:

I particularly enjoyed not splattering tomato sauce all over my shirt. Feels like a real improvement. Consider this opener tested, improved, and tested.   :tu:

I made up a pizza sauce, toasted the baguettes, and assembled the sandwiches. After a quick broil in the oven, lunch was ready, courtesy of the SOG PAD (don't open the spoiler if you are hungry or particular about the treatment of baguettes.):

Mrs Nix loved her lunch!

I heard back from SOG. It looks like we're on the same page now, but the news isn't all good:

Quote

Hello Jack,

Unfortunately my answer to the problem would be to send in your Power Access Deluxe multi tool and we will trade it out with one of our Powerlock multi tools *which would be same quality as the Paratool you’ve said you’ve owned for years. Sending a new file I don’t think is the answer because I am afraid it would be of the same quality as the current one you have now. I would be glad to change the tool out for one of our higher quality tools. Let me know if this is something you would like to do?

Thank you,
Amanda

While this does represent a great level of customer service, I'm not entirely thrilled by the option. The SOG PAD was appealing for some of it's features, e.g. the integral hex-bit holders, and I was not a big fan of the Powerlock design.  It's interesting to see that SOG is offering to trade one of their less-expensive models for this newer, pricier model.

Honestly, I'm saddened here and not sure what to do.  I feel that since SOG has made an offer, and given my general level of dissatisfaction with the PAD, it would be churlish of me to refuse the exchange offer; but I can't say I'm all that excited about a Powerlock.

What do you guys think?

I still think that everyone else appears to have a better file on their PAD compared to yours.  :D
Hooked, like everyone else. ;)

All hail the hook!

Could be, but SOG doesn't appear to have the same level of confidence as you do.

Or....it's just easier to send me a different tool.

Difficult decision Nix  ??? :ahhh
I would look at what tools You use more on a MT
Has the Powerlock got the tools you need
Or do you think the PAD is more useful
If you want to stay with the PAD than
I would go for a replacement from SOG  :tu:

To me their email says we know that the PAD has bad tools
And we can’t be bothered to make better quality tools
But as you complained about the quality of the tools
We don’t really want to send you a replacement
As it will still have the same bad tools
So we rather send you a more expensive model
To hopefully get you off our back and stop complaining

If you have a model of MT that you would prefer
Why not ask SOG if they can send you one
As they are trying to send you a different model
Rather than replace the PAD  :tu:

Has the Powerlock got the tools you need?

Good questions, W.

I liked the PAD for the hex-bit holder/driver and the 1/4" driver.
The Powerlock does have a 1/4" driver.
I could always get a 1/4" hex-bit adapter and select the bits I'd be most likely to need.

Both tools have pliers, a knife (not a fan of the Powerlock's 'combo' blade), cap lifter/driver, can opener/driver, awl (again, PAD seems to have a better awl), saw, and file.
The file on the Powerlock does look like it works (but testing is believing).
I'm not a fan of serrated blades, so that's no loss for me.
The PAD's jewler's driver (now that I've tuned it a bit) seems like it could come in handy, but I don't know that I need it.

The Powerlock's folding tool covers seem silly, but it sounds like some people do like them.

Still mulling..........

Hmmm... difficult...

Meanwhile on Day 19, today was very busy, so no tests. Beauty shot only, again.

Cheers!
