General opinion is that we all miss the grey one...and the longer Phillips.

I guess it was my wishful thinking...

I for one, prefer the "new" glass lens (version 3, if I'm not mistaken) over the one that came in the grey lens holder (version 1).

And I own 4 SAKs with the version 3 magnifying lens and none of them falls out of the holder (you do feel that the lens could be removed if you really wanted to).

I have several older cheap, toy-grade RC cars in which that the old-style in-line Phillips (ala Marlboro Outdoorsman and my mid-'90s SwissChamp) can reach the deeply inset screw, but a modern one (i.e. my Champion and Explorer) can't.  Need to pick up an older Explorer.

This is what annoys me, however. The current file is one of the best files on the market, but you can't get both the old mag lens and new file with older SAKs, aside from some rare transitional models.

I agree, the larger diameter and lower magnification means that the magnified area is wider and more "forgiving" in terms of pointing/focusing making the magnifier much more useable. My only gripe is that it's very difficult to distinguish from version 2 (molded plastic) on ebay pics.

I could not have eplained my preference for the version 3 lens any better than how you said it  :salute:.

And I share your gripe about figuring out whether you're buying a plastic V2 lens or a glass V3 one.  If the seller shows real pics of the tool I get it right about 90% of the time (using the method I explained earlier in this topic). But sometimes they use stock photo's, in which case I walk away...

Same problem when I'm buying from an online shop, most of the time they will keep using old pics while the tool has seen 3 "upgrades", and trying to explain the difference between the lenses to an online shop employee who has no idea what you're on about only makes you look like a crazy person... (been there  ::)).

Work in progress.

I plan to make the mount a little shorter so I can use this paired with the longer Phillips. So basically the size of the grey magnifier but with the larger lens.

:like: :like: Nice work, Max! I’m thinking of doing something similar to put a magnifier into a Pioneer X, when I can find time….

Hello :)
Sorry for digging such old topic. I want to buy my first SAK, and I chose Explorer due to it tool configuration (IMO perfect in office environment I work in). During research I found this topic and it looks like Victorinox addressed lens issue but maybe someone can confirm this is no longer an issue? I visited Victorinox store in my city today (in Poland) and the sample unit in store have lens that looked like the one with notches and tabs (posted above in post #97). As I touched it it felt little rattly, however didn't pop out. So is there a way to be sure that this problem is really addressed by Victorinox?

I have carried an Explorer with the clear frame, glass lens, and 10 retaining tabs for over nine months and I've never had a problem with the lens falling out or even being loose in the frame. I'm confident that Victorinox has fixed the issue in their newer knives.

I didn't know that they changed the lens again. Presumably it has better quality now (less aberrations) since it is glass again?
All my grey lenses have new owners now (1 lost, 2 stolen) and the 3 I have are one-piece. I don't care much, since I EDC the best 10x triplet existing but that grey lens was iconic I think.

I was testing the resistance of my Explorer yesterday. It was fine. Tried to put some pressure sideways, and opening and closing it violently. It seems as strong as ever.

I prefer the glass lenses because they resist scratching better than the plastic lenses. I have a Champion Plus with a plastic lens and it’s very easy to scratch.

Yes they changed it again about a year ago.  It's still clear but fully molded around the lens so it can't be removed. I have to cut the plastic now to remove it.

Can you post a close up photo of it?

Yup.  It looks the same but the older kind had alternating plastic nibs, but now it's a solid ring molded around.

Wow, I haven’t seen that version yet. That solution seems so obvious to me that I wonder why Victorinox didn’t make it that way from the beginning? Especially since the old gray magnifier was held in place the same way.

Is the newer lens as strong as the gray framed one or like the one piece version?
