Day3

Use Chip Chop No1 to open a coffee packet for breakfast, despite the axe is paper shaving sharp, I was a little surprise it kept skidding and missing the mark if I were tried to cut from the middle.  I end up cut across from the side.

Fuzzaxe Fakeaxe Day 2

Sorry, not much use for the axe today, it's been a very long busy hectic day and the only cutting tools employed were my circular saw and chop saw, and both pretty much used to their limit.

However, the axe still came in useful at one point - to prop a door open when I came home so that I could put some tools and materials away...  :2tu:

Nice use!  :D

Day: 02

Made a mask for Lyndax today. My first attempt at an axe mask and the results were......mixed.

First, a little design work

(Image removed from quote.)

I wanted the heel of the blade to hook in and get captured by the mask. This meant I had to be able to insert the bit and rotate it into position with enough clearance to avoid the toe cutting the sheath open. The geometry of the blade made this a bit trickier than I expected.

Obviously I wanted a welt. For added strength at the toe and beard, I thought I'd use some rivets. Normal stitching is all I think is needed for a knife sheath, but for an axe mask I thought a few safety rivets would be a good idea.

Once I had a template, I cut out my leather.   Used both Lyndax and a craft knife to cut out my leather.

(Image removed from quote.)

This might be the wrondg way to go about making a sheath, but I typically leave the welt a bit oversized, glue and stitch everything up, then trim off the excess. This may not have worked as well for me this time.

(Image removed from quote.)

I've never used Pliobond before. The house is fairly chilly (58ºF) and the glue may not have cured very well (or maybe I rushed it....) at this temperature. Anyway the Pliobond worked well enough and merits more testing.

Once the mask was glued together, I stitched up the leading edge. I also marked out where I wanted my rivets. It turned out that I should have given myself a bigger margin, these are just a bit close to the edge. (Plenty of room for the stitching, so that's not an issue.)

(Image removed from quote.)

Lyndax trimming the tab of the retention strap. (I thought I had brass snaps, but all I had was a dark nickel snap. Planning fail #1.)

(Image removed from quote.)

Final step was to rivet the mask up and then work on the finishing a bit......but my rivets were too short. Planing fail #2. So I used some Chicago screws instead. These had slightly wider posts and heads....and ended up a little closer to the edge than I would have liked.

Here's the mask screwed and stained:

(Image removed from quote.)

Despite a little design work, the mask is still pretty tight and a bit tricky to put on. I'm assuming that it will loosen up a bit and wear in. In which case, it might be perfect.

Lessons learned:

1. Design a touch extra space into a mask.
2. Don't rush.
3. Allow ample margins, you can always trim away excess later.
4. Use a glue as directed, and don't keep the house so cold.
5. A little advance planning and preparation might be helpful.
6. Know your materials and what you actually have in a drawer, not just your head.

Still looks great from where I stand!

Day2
While I am going to be trying to primary the SOG Fasthawk its short edge makes it a questionable choice in the kitchen. Enter this un-named Camillus bearded hatchet from the 'XPLORE' gift set they offered a few years ago.
I always thought this thing looked better suited for the kitchen anyway. Now we'll find out.

So what's for dinner... hatch pepper roasted turkey with Colby cheese on fresh whole wheat rolls

Good use, now I am hungry!

(Day two for me) Mini Bruks involved in some food prep this morning. The cherry tomatos from the garden are almost done for the year. Bruks used to cut a bunch up to maks a bruschetta for lunch. Mozzarella cheese, basil, olive oil, and tomatos. Still sharp enough to fillet a very ripe cherry tomato.  :tu:

Day 3 photos

Well I never thought of using a axe/hatchet for kitchen use but it works great!
I am going to have to rethink the uses out. Could it be it is the only tool you need if you were stuck with only one tool??
Cut that puppy up great and clean!

Solving problems you didn't know you had in the most obscure way possible
