Do we know what blade he whittled with? i gather Abe Lincoln carried a 6 blade thing and Truman and also George Washington a Barlow  :dunno:

I did a little searching and could NOT find a specific knife. There must one of his knives in the U.S. Grant presidential library.....

General Grant had two habits for dealing with stress: chewing on a cigar and whittling. He was noted to be constantly whittling, often turning big stick into little sticks.

Well played, Borg!

Congrats Borg! Well played :hatsoff:

Day 25 - My “No Name” made the rounds today and the blade tip came in handy to lift masking tape edges from the masked number plates on a block of lockers repainted.

It was a toss up between Grant and Houston...I went with Houston because some of his whittling works are in his library! Which the next time I go visit my sister in Texas, we will be going!
I enjoyed this as it had me googling and you can only learn new stuff doing that and I did. Thanks Nix

Do you mean 492 and 493 ?

The 492 has a spear point main blade and the 493 is a clip point

My Geppetto is staying in today...

Stopped by an "Antique" store, after an appointment, today, looking at their knives.  Nothing caught my eye until I saw this on my way out.

It's a single bladed slip joint. 3 7/8 long with a 3 inch blade. Looks like someone took a grinder or dremal to the blade.  Only markings say Stainless, Brazil on the tang.
Handle scales appear to be Bakelite.

Going to spend a little time this afternoon to try to rehabilitate it as best I can.  Anyone know anything about it, let me know.  Only cost a couple bucks, so I'm just playing around with it.

Congrats Borg.

There are some really nice looking knives that people are adding to collections.

Day 25

Sodbuster Jr cut off the little plastic ties on a new dog poop bag dispenser I’m attaching to the leash I’m making for my Mom’s dog.

Day: 25

Used the Sodbuster to prep some pork belly for a rich and sumptuous Indian version of the famous Portuguese dish, Pork Vindaloo. Quite excited for dinner now......

(Oh, and this Sodbuster is a great slicer. I may have mentioned that already...)

Day: 25.5

The Sodbuster also got used to open a parcel from Ireland today...... :mail:

McStitchy has issued me a personal challenge to "put some patina" on an Opinel.  Apparently he got tired of hearing me go on and on about how great all of the Opinels have been looking. And, he's right, I've been a wee bit jealous of some of the older ones with some good patina on them.

His personal challenge came with a Nº 7:

Thanks, Matt!   :ahhh

Now, I'm usually a strict 'one tool for one challenge' kind of MTo member. However, I feel that I've learned enough in the first three weeks of using the Sodbuster that switching tools at this point won't be an issue. And, I'm not going to duck a personal challenge from a one-handed man.

So, I will be switching to full-time Opinel Nº 7 use for the rest of the challenge.   We only have 5 days left, but that may be enough time to start a decent patina.......  :D
