Saving the SE knive from the bin
on: April 26, 2019, 03:30:30 PM
So.

Today I was doing something stupid with a normal serrated edge knife at home. I was trying to pry open a rock salt grinder that someone had rotated backwards and wasn't grinding anymore. Of course serrated knives are not made for that and those plastic grinders are unbelievably tough. So the tip of the knife snapped.

I was about to throw the knife in the bin when I just thought. Why don't try to save it from its fate and make it into something else. Worse case scenario it was already damaged. So I got a pencil out, traced a few different shapes until I was sort of happy and pulled out the dremel.  :dunno:

So here it is. I don't know what it will be used for. I almost thought about cutting a new longer blade for the Leatherman Wingman, but the knife is a bit thinner and a lot more flexible sideways than the combo blade on the wingman.

I accept suggestions on good uses for this

At least it is sharp, which is great considering that I have been known for making knifes into steel bars  :twak:

Ready for the garden or garage :)
The natural evolution of a kitchen knife once retired is to noble service in hacking up leather and rubber and being used as a scribe or a scraper,

Looks like it would be handy for sticking into electrical outlets. :pok:

Just kidding. Please don't!  I would throw that in a tackle box if you do any fishing. With the serrations gone I bet you could put a wicked edge on it.

Great save! As a beater, it's perfect. I made a sheepsfoot out of what was left of an old steak knife. A good inch of the tip had been broken, and another inch was so chipped up, I just cut that part off, and then reprofiled what was left to a sheepsfoot blade. I actually use it in the kitchen a lot. Only tools used were a Dremel with a cutting wheel and a hand-cranked grinder (one, it cost me nothing, number two, you can't get the speed up enough to ruin a heat treat; but the stone is worn down pretty bad and in need of replacement.

Quite right.

A knife wouldn't fit very well, what you'd want is a knitting needle or something like that and poke it right in there.  :2tu:

That's the trick. Especially if you stand in a basin of water while you do it.  :2tu:
