Mod: Wood scales on a 91mm waiter!
on: July 21, 2019, 07:24:52 AM
So I snagged a Schrade Century waiter.  It’s the same as a victorinox waiter, but cheap and available. (Schrade bought the parts from victorinox back in the day. It had their stamp on the blade, but other than scales it’s in every way a Vic. Vic scales pop right on)

So I broke the scales because I put too much lateral force on the tool. They popped off and I glued them on and then they popped off and broke. (Don’t use the combo tool in a 1-layer knife as a pry bar. Even for really light duty stuff.)

I had some wood scales from a cheap Chinese SAK copy, and I whittled cutouts for the rivers, then expoxied the scales on. The epoxy and wood adds considerable strength!  Then I sanded all around the edges to make the wood flush with the liners, and in some places I sanded the liner down to be flush with the wood. Stained it and I like the results!!

Charles.

Good thinking, and looks great! The new scales spruce up the knife really well.   :salute:

Anytime someone says “91mm Waiter” (the one Victorinox knife that continues to elude me) they have my immediate attention.

I had no idea these knives existed...and that they are readily available as NOS. I think I may pick one up.

Thanks for the tip!

Yeah I really like them. The green is a great color, and the red isn’t bad, but the green really does it for me. I actually really prefer the schrade tweezers too. They open wider and are a lot easier to use. Toothpick and tweezers are swappable into a vic too. BUT the toothpick has the opposite angle to a vic (so it would be possible to have two toothpicks in a vic 91mm).

Or you can swap victorinox scales on it and nobody would ever believe otherwise.

Arrived today, and I’m very pleased.  This knife isn’t *quite* up to Victorinox standards, but it’s leaps and bounds better than most clones.

Again, many thanks again, @ChopperCharles for the heads-up!
