Spydie blade re-profiling
on: August 10, 2019, 05:06:31 PM
Somewhat I always like hawkbill but most are on the large-ish side.. By large, I mean anything more than 2in is too large and people here gasp at them.. Not really a knife friendly country..

I had these 2 for quite a while but didn't like the blade shape, I do mostly draw cuts and slashing so a hawkbill to me works best. Took a long deep breath and took it to my trusty dremel. End result, I think still passable. The smaller one I gave it a chisel grind and for some reason cuts much better than the larger one that's a normal V-grind. Sorry I forgot their model names. Today I realise that my sharpening skills are really terrible as I struggle to put a cutting edge on the larger one..

It's very difficult to use a high speed tool in reshaping a blade without generating heat which has the possibility of destroying the temper of the steel..
"All that is necessary for the triumph of evil is that good men do nothing."  **Edmund Burke**

"They that can give up essential liberty to obtain a little temporary safety deserve neither liberty nor safety."    **Benjamin Franklin**

Ya that's something I was worried about.. I tried to keep the heat to a minimum. Just around 15 to 20k rpm. Brushing along the edge rather than pressing down. My fingers are on the blade all the time (safely) so I know when things get too hot. Constant water dips as well.

That's what I do too... except I use a belt sander.  :tu:

Pretty steady hand.  It came out nice.  I'd say you are a brave man.

 Pretty fine line between foolish and brave here. Had tried on the smaller to make sure I am comfortable first. These are low end spydies so not so much to worry about.

I sooooo need a belt sander. And a press drill.

Well, the funny thing is I have a fancy-pants bench sander, but the one I always use is a just a cheap hand held one that I built a stand for so that it sits at 90° - it's brilliant.  :tu:
