Edge

I was stoked that one of my favorite knife movies is on Hulu right now. "The Edge." I just felt it was filmed very well, the knife was a prominent feature, and the story was well written. I may not be a big fan of Alec Baldwin's personal views, but I have always enjoyed his art...and I love Anthony Hopkins character - a billionaire not just caught up with making more money, but well read, super intelligent, but also very down to earth.

With that being said, here is the question I have for you. Brian Lyttle's knife was featured well in the movie, and became a great tool of survival for the men caught in the wilderness. What would YOUR "Edge" knife be? Either, which knife would you want to be featured in the movie, or, which one would you want to have along in a similar situation.

Now, onto the guidelines:
1. Must be a traditional design
2. Must be a single blade folding knife with a locking blade (I am a huge SAK fan, and that would be my first choice...but not in the guidelines)
3. Must be similar in size to the famous Lyttle knife (My other survival choice is a BK9)

Looking through my collection, I think I would go for my AG Russell Arkansas Hunter based on the 1920's "King of the Woods" design.

I suppose it depends on
  • Whether we must pick a knife we already own (not explicitly stated in the rules, but seems to be the trend so far), and
  • How close in size to the Lyttle knife's 3 3/4" blade is considered "similar"?  Is a 3" - 5" blade allowable, or does it need to be like 3.5 - 4"?

Options I might consider that I already own are my A.G. Russell Large Folding Hunter (though with a 4 5/8" blade it might be considered too large to be similar to the Lyttle knife), or failing that my Schrade (USA) Cave Bear.  If it doesn't have to be something I own, I would strongly consider something like a Buck custom shop 110 with drop point S30V blade.

:iagree: Never watch this movie, but the trailer looks exciting.  Another vote for Buck 110.

Good questions Nate.
1. No, let's make it a whatever you'd want, whether you own it or not.
2. Similar in size - The Large Folding Hunter would be great! I have one and it has made a great game and camp knife. Great for field dressing deer, great for food prep. Despite it's size, it handles very very well. I was just saying similar in size to avoid some ridiculous folding sword fantasy knife.

Buck Custom Shop in S30V...oh heck yeah! I cannot imagine a better knife for this criteria. Classic lines with advanced steel.

I love that movie!
Me too. Not to go off topic, but there were little subtleties in the movie I appreciate. The gentlemen telling him to give his friend a coin for the gift of the knife. I don't really subscribe to that superstition, but it showed a level of respect for the knife that is rarely seen in movies. Also, Charles Morse didn't just whip out the knife in dire circumstances, there was the scene where he is on the porch peeling and eating an apple. I men, how cool is it to actually see REAL knife enthusiast behavior?

Tidbits:
The late Brian Lyttle played a bit part in the movie. If I remember correctly, he was one of the gentlemen helping with their gear when they fist arrive on the plane.
Lyttle came to the attention of the movie makers during "Legends of the Fall." Brad Pitt actually visited Brian's home, and bought several knives for people involved in the movie. When making "The Edge" there were several prop knives being considered, and Anthony Hopkins recognized the Lyttle knives.

And I love all the little things that Charles had learned before the situation even happened, like making a compass using a needle. Very cool.

Now I need to do a search for other movies similar to The Edge :-)

Try "The Snow Walker." Set in the 50's, a pilot crashes in the Northern Territory with his Inuit passenger. After nearly dying when he treks off on his own to get help, she saves him, then teaches him how to survive.

Also, a pretty good one, "Far From Home: The Adventures of Yellow Dog." This one is about a kid who has to survive along with his dog. He carries a scout knife and the kid is pretty savvy about survival.

I'll have to duck out of this one.
Only non-locking folders or fixed blades for me.

I would pick my 1974-1980 Buck 110 with 440C blade or my  Buck 110 Drop Point with S30V blade.

Actually the drop point would probably be the best of the 2 because the blade is sturdier at the point.

Nice AG Russell spudley!

Ok, so I have a confession to make about recommending that movie. Annabella no longer lives in Vancouver. She lives here. We met a few years ago, and quickly tired of the long distance relationship. She moved here and I am proud to say, Annabella Piugattuk is now Annabella Daniels...in other words, Mrs Spudley.

Just kidding, I am full of crap...but that would be an awesome story. Plus, I would never have to field dress my own deer ever again!

BTW - I jokingly tell that story because I started seeing a girl a few years ago that was introduced to me by a friend. She was a bit wild, but VERY pretty. Turns out, she had done a few adult movies and I didn't know it until she told me after a couple of months. Later, I shared that story with my folks, and my mother just shook her head. She looked at me in all seriousness and said, "You need a woman like that one on Snow Walker. At least then she'd hunt with you." Mom is a big fan of that movie.
