Thanks 50. I tend to favour blades with oho and oversized handles. I dun mind a 4-5in handle with a 2-2.5in blade. So sometimes I will just buy them and shorten and reshape to my requirement and preference. A very recent obsession that I have..
Recently I too have been crazing about smaller knives, especially fixed blade. It's rather rare in the market to find something that has 4in handle and 3in blade, while the stock of the blade is around 2mm(3/32) thick. Everywhere I look, they either use heavy stock 1/8 or above, or the handle is too short(something like 3.5in or under).
Small knives have a class all their own. Ask any die hard SAK fan and they will probably tell you they have anything from a Vic Classic to Minichamp on their keychain or in their pocket. For many, it is all the knife they need. For his birthday, I gave my uncle an AG Russell 3" Bolstered Lockback knife in VG10. It is a small knife and I knew it would be one of the few knives he would actually carry. Up to that point, he ALWAYS carried a Case Small Stockman and I have watched him field dress many deer with that little knife.I have a pre-packed EDC bag that I throw in the car or motorcycle when traveling and I keep a Vic Executive in there. It is one heck of a knife "pound for pound."Below are some of my other minis. The Case Cheetah Cub, the Case MiniCopperhead and the tank-tough Buck 55.(Image removed from quote.)(Image removed from quote.)(Image removed from quote.)
Thats why I cut down some of my knifes. I made an order for the Lil Native after you mentioned it.... Look like a very suiting candidate for what I have been searching for. Pilar, not so much... not too fond of getting one with a metal handle. Still prefer FRN or G-10. Sad thing is the seller/USPS on Amazon somewhat screwed the order.. 2 weeks into the order and I check with them why it was taking so long... They checked and said the package was sent back to the sender..........
Oh, btw, Sam, you did a fantastic job on making those finger choil, how did you do it? With a dremel or angle grinder? Or just handfiling? I am a little worried I might scratch up the original choil too much if I want to enlarge it.Most choils I got from knives are usually on a small size, and I would love to find a way to enlarge those choil so my finger have less chance of getting nicked whenever I do want to choke up.
I only did the choil on the Kabar and the clasp knife. That depends on mood really.. The clasp knife I brought it to my bench grinder cos I didn't quite care for it .. The kabar I was more careful.. I used a diamond cutting disc to roughly shape it out. Then a sanding wheel thingy on a dremel to tidy up. Slow with lots of water cooling. Most work are done on a dremel as that's the only tool I have access to. But I notice the Kabar keeps chipping with light use.. It was quite a boring knife at first..
More of a utility knife but very handy. One hand open and close and cheap replacement blades. Comes with a bunch of blades. and made in the US.(Image removed from quote.)
Another small added. It was pretty much a recovery project. Bought it in pretty bad shape. Its a partially serrated Before and after pics.
Sam, that's a great job restoring and creative on the Emerson opening! I own an Emerson but never did rely on the wave opening too much, it does rip your pants regardless what you wear. Maybe the liner lock on a smaller knife would be weaker? Looks really functional!Btw, is the Lil Native on its way again?
Nice work Sam!
It's quite upsetting on that order... When the seller realise its being sent back to them, we had been communicating on whether they will send again or do a refund. I really wanted the item so I told them to resend. About a week later, they cancelled and refund the order without informing me before hand. They just left the reason as "the address is undeliverable" or something like that. I was rather pissed at that time. I complained to amazon. Amazon was really helpful but couldn't do much as it a third party seller on their website. But, they offered me some credits as apology which I am very grateful. I ordered again using priority shipping buying directly from amazon. They only had the back lock model but I dun mind it now as I am getting used to it after a few week fiddling with my other knives. It should be here by tmr. That 3rd party seller is Outfitter Country. I dun care if I am just unlucky but I am surely never going to buy from that company again.
Given my hands, that would make a much better hobby knife than the X-Acto type!
