Tomorrow should be the last day since we've got 31 days this month correct?
If you started on the 1st, surely today is the last day of a 30-day challenge (I know there’s a few running adrift for various reasons though)?? :dunno:
Agree with Rizio here, unless started late or making up missing day, most would probably finish on Day 30.  But sometimes I do see folks would linger on a challenge much longer just for the fun.  :D

Day 30

A bit of trivia about the 1961 Soldier from Wikipedia:  "The 1961 model also contains a brass spacer, which allows the knife, with the screwdriver and the reamer extended simultaneously, to be used to assemble the SIG 550 and SIG 510 assault rifles: the knife serves as a restraint to the firing pin during assembly of the lock."  I believe I have depicted the indicated area in today's picture

Some final thoughts on the Solider Challenge.

The trusty old Soldier had been my one and only for more than a decade.  I have hiked many miles in at least 6 states with it as my only tool.  I've done everything with it at several points in my life - where it was my only can opener, and even my only knife in the kitchen.  Some of my most prominent memories include - going camping with a big group, many novice campers, and being the only one with a MT or SAK - buying locally produced fresh fruits and bread on a road trip, and having just one way to prep them for a meal.

When I first got it - it had fewer tools than what I had before.  Coming from the original LM Wave and the Vx Champion, I did have scissors as an EDC way back before the Solder became my EDC.  But the Soldier became a fast companion for many years.  Looking back on this challenge - and indeed the last couple of days where I used the knife blade for things that I would have otherwise used scissors - I thought to myself just yesterday...  I'd made a conscious decision back in the 2000s that I would adapt to using the main blade for things that needed scissors.  I remember that in the beginning, there was something... adventurous... about it.  Almost felt like a mountain man who uses their fixed blade for everything.  I'd really gotten used to it though... so the daydreams of resourcefulness gave way to habit and reflex...  and this eventually gave way utilitarian practicality of the right tool for my new role at work.  That's what Swiss Army Knives are all about though, aren't they?  The right tool for the job?  If you need a saw or scissors or a file in your EDC, there's a SAK for you - a Huntsman or a Compact is still a nice SAK (though it's not alox  ;) ).  So somewhat reluctantly I incorporated scissors into my EDC a few years ago.

Then on Wednesday when I really needed scissors at work, and again on Friday when I carefully had to cut tags off my new pants without nicking the fabric... I first got a bit frustrated.  Then I reminded myself that I'd happily done this sort of thing for a decade.  It's only a recent convenience that I've had with scissors, but it's a welcome one.

I thought about must-have factors in an EDC SAK for me.... scissors... Alox...two layers... I have to pick only two... don't I?  I wonder if Alox is purely a superficial requirement of mine - if it has equal weight of the other requirements.  If you asked me this before the challenge, I'd have said that with so few requirements, each must have equal weight. But after this challenge... I'm beginning to think that scissors may be more important than Alox.   And so I've floundered between the Compact and the PioneerX as of late, and have my sights set on a Voyageur... If I ever find one.

After this challenge, I'm going to give the PioneerX a good long run, before the Minimal SAK Challenge in November, when I'll go in with the Compact.  I can anticipate what I'm going to think though - that the PioneerX is too wide.  And then I'll be confused again - because that's me.

The Soldier challenge was fun, and everyone posted great pictures.  It was really nice to see all the varieties of the Soldier - for me, the highlights were seeing the old claw can opener in use, and the new 2008 Soldiers part-serrated blades doing the job.  I'm really drawn to the commonality with outdoor recreation with the Soldier lineup - with the 1961 modeled after the Scout knife, and the 2008 modeled after the One Hand Trekker

Combined histories make us realize that we aren't so different, that history does repeat itself, and also that we are all fighting different battles with the same fortitude.  This month we honored the Soldiers who fought and died for the people of their country.  As May 2020 draws to a close, and new cases of COVID-19 in the US are beginning to diminish, I would also like to remember the nearly 300 healthcare workers in the US, and the more than 1000 healthcare workers around the globe, who fought and died, so that others might live.

DAY 30
Used my Soldier for package duty to open up...  another Soldier!  A 2008 1/5000 run with the Collector Companion book still in the wrapper.  :woohoo:  Perfect way to end the 30 day Soldier challenge!  My thoughts on the Soldier(s)...  I really like them both, but I would probably consider the older Soldiers for use when heading out into the woods, while I prefer the modern Soldier with me when headed into work. I've also learned I'm not a fan of the type of scales on the modern Soldier after putting it through it paces.  I've ordered a set of Navy Camo scales to replace them on my '11 and will be EDC'ing it or my Trekker to work with me.  Been a fun challenge!

Do we have to apply for the badge, or do the moderators give it to all of us today?

Day 30:

Ah...the good old SAK has once again proven to be a handy and useful pocket tool. The Soldier did awl that was asked of it and with aplomb at that. It beggars belief that most people don't carry a SAK on their person on a daily basis. ow can that be? They are just so incredibly useful; just as this past 30  days has demonstrated.

And the Soldier is great. I love awl the tools: blade, cap lifter, can opener, awl, and scissors.

...wait. It doesn't have scissors!

The lack of scissors is probably the one serious short coming of the Soldier. Sure, you can pair it with some scissors or another SAK with scissors, but it really should have scissors. Why carry a Spartan when you can carry a Climber?

 :climber:

Still, small tantrums aside, the Soldier was excellent. In fact I don't think I ever found myself needing scissors in the past 30 days. That is a bit unusual, however--I normally use scissors frequently. The Soldier just got lucky that I was doing more fishing or fly tying or nail trimming or package opening. But...an Old Soldier is a lucky Soldier...so I'll take that any day.  :D

Day 30. My thoughts. My USGI issue knives, and the M1942 both make me wonder what they have seen in the many, many years they have used. Someone went to the trouble to salvage a strap off an old military duffel bag to make a sheath for the Demo Knife. The '42 Soldier has seen a lot of wear and tear from real use--never a shelf queen. My Camillus US Marine Combat has a modification the NAVY SEALS typically make, a swedge that has been sharpened.  I've always suspected this knife has been used in combat.  This challenge has really also solidified my decision to move to Alox for users.  As long as you get 91mm with older solid Cellidor scales or nylon scales; you're good. 111mm disappoint me with their liner durability--supposed to be big, strong work knives. But, the liners are thin and flimsy.

Used the 1942 to pack up some assorted junk.

I laid this rather worn (blades are still full, and snap well, but some dummy reprofiled the spear main blade to a crude clip) World War II issue USN Utility laid out since the start of the challenge. Didn't carry it until today, as these shorts can't lug the 100mm Soldier; with its 5 ounce weight.

Used that to open a LEGO set, 40370. This was last month's promo.I like LEGO, I just don't buy a ton of it at once; so the minimums are a bit much for these promos. My I bought it off Bricklink for not a whole lot  too much; $20. I am thinking about getting into LEGO trains.  My plans are to upfit this train for couplers, add some cars and track, and probably motorize it.
