That is kinda neat...at least Gerber seems to be exploring the market and coming out with nice tools. This is like the 3rd item they have come out with that is useful.

I'm a little curious about the balisong style of opening versus the "big pocketknife" used during WWII as the style of folding machete.

Hm, great idea, but I'll wait for some real world testing first. Not a fan of the balisong style mechanism of closing for something you would use for chopping, i think the latch would soon become too loose to keep the knife open and would flop around. And the stop pin will eventually wear and depress the space where it comes in contact with the handles. I hope they used strong enough materials for those contact points.

Also, machettes are usually top heavy with a lot more blade than handle. Not sure how well it will perform as a machette, I'd sooner just call it a big ass knife

As you are holding both handles together, I am not sure that the latch is that important when you are chopping. I see it more of a necessity for when it is folded and tucked away. Getting past the fanboyism of butterflies, the reality is that it is generally (at least) twice as strong as a folder as it has two pins instead of one.

Very cool idea to carry a larger blade like that when out and about

I hope that the way it opens is a non issue and that these things work out like Gerber hopes they do

I have a set of folding loppers that Gerber use to sell and they are ever so handy when doing yard work to carry in the back pocket and help trim trees and stubborn bushes

Everything about this one, feels like quality. The safety mechanism is actually quite neat. The multiple stages are designed to force you to get your fingers out of the way of the blade!
