Carving folders
on: February 19, 2020, 10:25:45 AM
Hi folks,

I really enjoy whittling at the moment.
What I miss is a proper carving knife.

For rough shaping I use some scandy fixed, and a folder afterwards.

What do I have/used.:

SAKs
usually okish, the alox lack a small blade, the celidor annoy when in longer use (something is always poking)

Case Whittler
Better, sheepfoot blade is good, but I prefer a bladeshape like Vic and then a smaller sheepfood for fine work. the small blades are very thin and flexing.

Boker Carbon Stockman
Good, mainblade too long and pointy.

Any suggestions for me?

I have seen some flexcut folding knives for whittling, but haven't tried any of them.
You could check it out and see if it is something for you :tu:

You can use the electrician blade in the alox model.

I have a Carving Jack from Flexcut which I haven't really get to use much.  But it's definitely a legit tool for carving, and beware whenever opening/closing the tool implements, it got pretty stiff spring/pivot and the tools are sharp.

Two of my favorites

Schrade  34OT , the  older model with tang stamp Schrade Walden if you can find one has better blades for whittling I have found

Victorinox Tinker. I ground off smooth the key ring holder, for more comfortable use. Use a rotary cut off wheel, files and finally fine sandpaper to remove and smooth surface.

My 2 cents

:iagree: I'm not the best or most regular carver but from the little I did do it was pleasurable.

Btw, I don't know whether it's completely relevant, but one of my favorite for wood related task is Brisa Enzo Birk 75.  True scandi grind and a solid perfomer, love that knife:
