Automatic Watch Recommendation
on: March 01, 2020, 01:22:45 AM
I am a big fan of automatic watches. I love the craftsmanship, see all the gears moving and just the fact that they work without any fancy technology. I have a Tissot Automatic, which I am very fond of. I just don‘t wear it very often, as I don‘t wanna damage it doing my daily chores.

So I am looking for an automatic watch to wear everyday. I wear a Timex Expedition daily, so I would like something in the same size range. I don‘t like large watches, they get always in the way of things. I like a clean design, nothing fancy. It needs a date display and should not be more expensive than $300.

Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated

Here are two examples so you get an idea of the style I am looking for:

Why not go for something a little different and get yourself a Vostok Russian diver.

Nice! This one is right up my alley

Never had anything to do with tritium gas tubes. Are they quick to charge? How long will they glow?

Glad to see you back up and going, Smashie!  :salute:

The tubes don't need to charge, they are a permanent radioactive source. Having said that because it's gaseous tritium it's a very weak source as far as radiation goes.

Vostok nice but they’re now Chinese.  :D

New Seiko’s have hack and are bullet-proof. Seiko 5 automatic range has that classic look too, and affordable. Below is SRPD55K1.

Those Vostoks are in no way what SirVicaLot is looking for, as far as the style/look is concerned. As nice as they are.

I still think you cannot go wrong with a Seiko 5 :)

I'd go for the Orient Mako (part of Seiko) over the new Seiko 5's.

The movement can be hand wound and is hacking like the NH36.

BUT the new 5's don't have a screw down crown and are only water resistant to 100m. Now 100m might sound like a lot but without the screw down crown I would consider it to be splash proof and wouldn't jump in a pool with it on,

Very interesting article, thanks!  :tu: I have to admit that those watches intrigue me. And for that price it is worth a shot. Now i just need to find one out the thousands or so designs that I like  :ahhh

I will also look into the Seiko 5s and the Orient Mako. I can tell I haven‘t looked into watches for a long time, I have no idea what is out there. Thanks for the recommendations, guys  :tu:

I looked at both the Orient Mako and the Seiko 5s, and they are both not quite what I am looking for. Part of that is that i prefer numbers on the dial. And yes, I am aware that the 2nd example in my initial post does not have numbers

I'd have suggested this one, too. I've seen one at a local jeweller's. An elegant style for all occasions, at a great price. Would look super smart on a brown leather strap; more casual on a nylon one. The bracelet is as crappy as most Seiko 5 ones are.

SirVicaLot, I'd understand if you find the dial busier than you'd like - but it's a Seiko 5, and for the price...  ;)
