What is your favorite shooter?
on: April 10, 2020, 08:34:22 PM
I thought this might be a fun thread for folks to participate in. This is open to everyone including anything that shoots something downrange. This means it is open to firearms, air guns, bows, javelins, slingshots, throwing knives, etc.

My question is this...what is your favorite shooter and why?

This is mine. It is a New England Firearms Handi-Rifle, and I think, it is the nicest model of the whole lot. My copy is the Varmint stainless steel bull barrel in .223 Remington. What makes mine a bit nicer, it is the Survivor model. One of the reasons why I like this so much is it checks-marks my affinity for multi-functional devices. Basically the NEF survivor is just full of built in storage making the rifle itself very versatile.

Before I get into more details, here is a link to some NEF history.

https://www.chuckhawks.com/nef_rifles.htm

I have added a few nice things to make this rifle better. I have added a nice nylon sling, along with a handy bi-pod. Extra ammo storage on the stock, and a Barska 4x16 Varmint scope.

I also added a hammer aid because I couldn't cock the rifle easily with the scope attached.

The Survival model gives you plenty of built in storage. You can pack a small survival kit, first aid kit, extra ammo, a fire starter kit, etc. The butt of the rifle is hollow with a swing door that screws tight.

Furthermore, there is a single screw found on the underside of the forearm.

Unscrewing this allows the forearm to come off. There is additional storage found here. With the forearm off, the rifle easily comes apart in 2 pieces, making the Survivor a backpack model.

The pistol grip is even hollow for even more creative storage.

So there you have it, the NEF Survivor is my most favorite shooter among all my shooting gear. I just love the simple single action operation of this rifle. I also like that I can turn this rifle into a survival kit, and backpack it if needed,

So what is yours?

Very cool rifle and great idea for a topic. I don’t know if I could pick a favorite.

Same here!

But I will give it some thought too.

I have some nice guns, which I have discussed here before, and I will be adding more in the future, but honestly I much prefer shooting my pellet guns, largely due to cost and legality.  And, while I have lots of pellet guns, there is one in particular that I enjoy shooting, and that's my father's old .22 Crosman Mk 2.

Here's a link to an old thread about it:

https://forum.multitool.org/index.php/topic,48087.0.html

I took a set of photos on burst mode with my phone one time when Megan was shooting it that shows the plume of gas when it fires, and you'd be hard pressed to tell it from a regular .22 from the look and feel of it.

In case anyone is interested, here are a few of my other air pistols:

All hail the hook!

I have the Mk 1 as well, which is the same thing but in .177.  The seals were gone on it when I got it so I took it to an airsmith who disassembled it and gave the pieces back to me a year later.  I've never managed to get it back together again....

One of these days I will get it done.

Oh, well. Here's my IJ-59 "Sputnik" rifle which I got in Moscow several years ago. In what condition is it? In the condition of a well-preserved gun from half a century ago, which no one has restored: the mechanisms work, the trunk is free of sores, the tree is alive. An excellent donor for the restoration project. It was bought as a gift to my dad, but I shot around 30 times from it, not very much. Of course, I don't know how many shots it had before I got it, but I suppose that a lot of. Surprisingly, I was able to find the PMC ammo which was suitable for that rifle. Anyway, my dad didn't use it much, so it's in my own collection now.

No pictures, but I've really enjoyed shooting a Smith & Wesson Model 617 and a Ruger MK II Government (though that one was a smurf to load). I'd like to get my hands on a Smith & Wesson Model 30 someday. Bows and slingshots are also potential future purchases.
