Paper replaced the stone tablet. The typewriter replaced the written page. The word processor replaced the typewriter.

Thank goodness I can remember a time when a hand written letter from a loved-one far away was an event to be treasured. Something you could touch, smell, and help you feel connected to that person. Now we have emojis.

Kids are typing before they are writing. Biometrics are replacing signatures. In the future, a pen will be an oddity collected by people like us...

It’s a sad day when they kill cursive, but the need for good penmanship, like the typewriter, is now history.

And just to lift us back to the theme of this thread...What’s the longest English word you can type on the top row of a QWERTY keyboard?

Typewriter  :pok:  :twak:   :D

I started handwriting letters to my nieces and nephews but never got anything back.

Too true, but it isn't just the younger generation.

A while back I sent a handy little torch (flashlight) to each of my 6 brothers/sisters (I'm a middle child at 66). I got two Thank You's, the other four didn't bother to even acknowledge that they received them (and they were hand delivered, so I know they got to their intended recipient).

That is just how life is lived these days, so I no longer expect any gratitude, that way I'm not disappointed.

I think part of the problem is that we live in a disposable world today, so tools are no longer seen in the same light as they were in years past. Today, if that torch is lost the family probably has several others around the house. In days past, it may have become a treasured item to be looked after and appreciated.

As I sit on my Crapper Throne in the Reading Room and explode on the Commode, thinking, how my flush beat John’s and Jerry’s pair? Jack’s had to run for the Water Closet yet ended up tripping on a Can bowing and hitting his Head on the Porcelain God! 🚽
