No action shots, but here's my red FX resting at home after saving another camping trip with its can opener this weekend, after the cheap dedicated manual can opener broke.

One of the best kinds of saves.   :climber:

Every time I read "who needs a can opener anymore, anyway?" I wonder if we literally live on different planets or something.

Thank you for your E-Mail and for your interest in our pocket knives.

The play and noise from the key ring is normal. The key ring is fixed on an intermediate layer. Together with the awl, the intermediate layer run on the same spring. The intermediate layer is needed, as the opposite function (blade) is thicker than the awl.

When you open the awl the spring is in tension - as the spring is pushed back the intermediate layer gets space and play. The play is needed as otherwise the awl would not close properly.

We hope to have helped you with these information and wish you to have a good day.

Victorinox's answer to the awl motion and sound question. I'm ignoring now😅

Well, those things are all 100% accurate.

The FX went on an overnight trip to the Kent coast yesterday (Whitstable) Mrs Surge and it lounged about on the beach  :2tu:

Also a nice sunset over the Thames estuary from the hotel restaurant  :tu:

The Farmer X is basically the Swiss Army Knife I've been waiting for since long before I joined MTo. I'm not going to review it, because its every implement has been discussed to death both here and abroad, from tame unboxings all the way to insane torture tests. Instead, I'm going to explain why I've gravitated to this tool set for so long.

(Image removed from quote.)
  • Alox is tough, tough, tough. While I adore my blue Px, I like that silver doesn't show nearly as much wear.
  • I've spent more time prying than almost anything. It's also good for screws and bottles. The 93mm is slightly larger than the 91mm.
  • Most food cans where I live do not have pull tabs, and I'm surprised at how often I end up in places without a crank opener. Also, I prefer this screwdriver tip to the inline Phillips because this one will work with #2 Robertson screws in a pinch. Those are the square ones, and they are ubiquitous here. If I need a dedicated Phillips, it's time for me to go full screwdriver anyway.
  • There's not much to say about the Victorinox blade that hasn't been said before.
  • I ream many things. The 93mm awl is also a decent pokey (for poking things.)
  • The saw is the tool I use least these days, which is one reason I've regularly switched between the Huntsman and the Pioneer X. When I'm hiking and camping, however, I really like having a proven saw on my person in case I get separated from larger dedicated tools. This has happened.
  • Halfway through a week-long mountaineering expedition, a paramedic performed a friend's much-needed emergency toenail surgery with the scissors on another friend's Climber. That's when I added scissors to my required lineup. More lastingly, I don't bite my nails anymore, and tiny origami dinosaurs are easier than they used to be.
  • The keyring isn't a tool as such. When you grow up in a forestry town, however, you soon learn that if you can't attach something to your body, you might lose it next time you fall headlong down a slope covered in devil's club (we found that knife a few weeks later, sprinkled with bite marks).

Just because it's nice outside and I've broken out the camera anyway, here are thickness comparisons with a Pioneer X and a Huntsman. I'll let you figure out which is which.

I'm the first one here, so I get to pick the name for the owners' club. Ha!

I totally agree with number 3.  If you need more screw driving capabilities it is time for a real screwdriver.  I also wanted to piggyback on what Jothra was saying about Robertson screws and the can opener can also work on some Torx screws as well.  The Farmer X is on my Wish List and this thread is really good.

I'm still using the Fx for food stuff at home most days, though I've been carrying the Free P4 most of the time. It's been more than a year, and the Fx is still hands-down my favourite Swiss Army Knife.

Nice picture, the green alox is my favorite.

I've had to lock up all my alox while I am in the go big challenge. Too much temptation,  I don't want to end up with a SAK in every pocket!

Fx came along hiking today. I think it is a great companion for that. Thinking about adding a fixed blade though, for those hikes into the middle of nowhere. Any suggestions on a light fixed blade?

It sure is

For lightweight, can't go wrong with a Morakniv (Basic, Craftline, or Companion) in stainless.  :salute: Though for the middle of nowhere I'd probably go with a Gerber Strongarm.

Depends on your definition of “light”, but Fallkniven F1 would be a good smaller choice IMO.

I think the Strongarm is too heavy, but a Mora sounds good  :tu:

Will have to lookup the F1

My definition of light in this scenario would be under 100gram.
