Victorinox Ranger with dual inline Phillips
on: June 20, 2020, 07:54:35 PM
I'm a huge fan of the Ranger, it's been the resident SAK my work bag since I discovered it, but I wish it had a Phillips. My first attempt at making a Phillips + dual opener layer left me somewhat cold, so I wanted to try another way. I haven't assembled the knife yet, but my mockup seems to work, so here's a little teaser:

Is there a width difference?

The tools are the same thickness (or close enough to work in the same layer), but the head is much thinner on the long one (I'm guessing its a PH0/1 vs 1/2).
By the way, the long Phillips is from the scissors layer of a slide-lock 111mm SAK.

Very interesting! I like, will the one work as a cap lift without opening? Or are the other tools in the way?

I don't think it was ever intended as a cap lifter, but I will definitely try, thanks for the suggestion.

Great mod.  :like:
I’ve thought of this before but never done it. Nice to see it can work! Well done.

A few outdoor shots, and some sad news: the long Phillips doesn't work as a cap lifter (even when opened). So it remains a dual-Phillips single-cap lifter Ranger. How disappointing  :(

Reading the title I thought "why two Phillips?" Then I saw what you were doing.  That's an awesome idea and looks superb.  :hatsoff:

Could make a great inline awl mod too, with a bit of a rework.

Thanks everyone for the kind words.
It could indeed make an awl, I also thought of a marlinspike for a moment... maybe some other day.

That's one option I considered (and am still considering for a future mod), is there a thread describing it? Is it a 91 or 84 SAK?

What a nice mod!  I really do like it, and a great alternative to the Mag glass.

Great mod!  No redundancy, as the long 111mm Phillips is #0/1 while the 91mm is #1/2. The eyeglass screwdriver is too small for #1, and the inline Phillips doesn't fit #1 too well.

By the way, aren't 111mm slidelock pins the same diameter as 91mm? Thus, guess I got to get an Outrider someone trashed, or is simply just cheap. I have a linerlock model, which means beefier pins.

How is the walk and talk on it?  After seeing this I was wondering if the new style spring would work better.

I haven't tried it with the new spring (I tend to prefer the longer old style Phillips unless there is a size constraint), but it works perfectly this way. The thin Phillips behaves and feels exactly like in the Outrider, with a good snap in the open position (not in the closed position, but that's by design so you can lift it enough to catch the head).
