Cadet X

Or should it be Super Cadet? Anyway, here's my first attempt at modding an alox knife. Thanks to the excellent instructions from PTRSAK I added Wenger scissors to an Victorinox Cadet. The peening is still far from perfect (no cellidor scales to hide my lack of skill here) but I'm really happy with the amount of functionality in such a small and thin package.

Thanks everyone for the kind words. Now I've got an alox Bantam sitting unused, if I only could find more Wenger scissors there may be a Voyageur-like in my future :dd:

I've now reworked my mod, tried to improved the peening which I managed somewhat, at the cost of damaging the scales a little more. Oh well, they weren't that new to begin with  While it was apart I tried adding an awl, and seeing that it worked I pushed my luck a bit further... I don't even know if it's legal around here, I hope I didn't offend any SAK gods by adding backsprig tools to an Alox knife :D Anyway, here's the final version. The closest I could find is the Salesman (same toolset with the small blade instead of the file and of course Victorinox scissors instead of Wenger), so I'll call it the Alox Salesman.

For anyone interested in replicating this mod, here's the complete formula. The 4th pin is necessary otherwise the backsprings move. The liners and the scales hold it in place without peening.

Love the fact the Phillips sits inside the scale.
That makes it a bit difficult to extract, but by pure luck the Phillips I had on hand was an older one with the can opening slit, which now works as a nail nick.

I’m in love with this. I think the cadet is an almost perfect carry but this actually could be!! Fine work.

At least it's gonna be my 5th-pocket carry for the foreseeable future. Now all I've got to do is make another one to have a spare and I'm done with modding.

Who am I kidding, it's so much fun I'd be willing to make a Spartan if I had to

Lately, I've been contaminated by the "one is none" line of thought, I must have been spending too much time in this neighbourhood
Anyway, I ended up making a backup for my EDC Cadet. No backspring tools here, but it's got ribbed scales taken from a heavily damaged Bantam.

Awesome mods. :tu:

Btw, how's the phillips holding up to torque over this time you had it? Do you feel any mending of the hidden pin?

So far the Phillips holds all right and I don't see any play in the center pin, but I don't remember ever needing much torque. I don't use it very often, mostly to tighten loose screws on the furniture. That's why I didn't include a Phillips in the grey version (OK, that and the lack of parts )

Parts swapping week-end a la casa de Combo!

The Salesman and the Cadet X exchanged their scales, so the Salesman is now clad in ribbed silver, which I think matches the old-style tools (thick blade, Phillips with can-key) better. Yeah, I know

The Cadet X is back in red, and in the process gained a Wenger Phillips (to be honest this mod is still a little rough and will require some additional work).

Peenig on alox is less difficult than I imagined at first. I use masking tape (not sure if it's useful, but it can't hurt...) and alox anodised colours are quite hard. A misplaced hit will damage the scale but it won't create a huge discoloured area. Actually the damage looks like normal wear, so unless you use brand new scales it's likely to go unnoticed. Obviously the rivet heads are far from perfect (they're nowhere near as smooth as original rivets and I still make them too big) but I can live with it.
Drilling is the step at which I damage scales

Wow... lovely mods ComboTool. Well done  :like:
I did have some ideas for a Cadet or Pioneer mod. in the past but feared I could damage the scales while peening.
