For me, the Deluxe Tinker is a great example of why it is important to keep an open mind in this life.

I always thought the DT looked clunky....and a bit silly.   :pommel:

Giant (OK, not so giant...) pliers in a pocket knife?   ???

And where's me wood saw?

The DT seemed like a complete flop. My mind was made up and...closed.   :td:

I don't need to tell you guys that MTo is a bad place for a knife and tool knut to hang out. They say that if you hang out in a bar long enough, sooner or later you're going to take a drink. (I personally wouldn't know....) At some point--probably after that drink--I decided that as a SAK fan I should own a SwissChamp.
The SC is sort of the modern icon of the SAK world, it's a 'Flagship' model. So....how could I, as a Swiss Army Knight, :SAKnight: , not have a SwissChamp?  ???

Once I had a SwissChamp, I did a 30-day challenge with it. I assumed it would be a miserable challenge with that big clunky knife in my pocket. But it wasn't. In fact, I kinda liked the SwissChamp. And I found it was really useful when I went fishing. I had always used a SAK with scissors when fishing, often just a Classic, but the SwissChamp gave me a little extra utility.

To my surprise, the underestimated pliers proved to be useful. Especially when fishing.  Hmmmmm.....

The SwissChamp is great, but it is big. Certainly it can be EDC'd without hardship, but I still find it to be a bit big. I'm a four layer man. Maybe five. With my SwissChamp experience in mind, I started thinking about my perfect "Fishing SAK":

In order of priority, I made myself a list:

1. Scissors
2. Knife (91mm or larger)
3. Pliers
4. Awl
5. Pin
6. Drivers
7. Hook

Wait!

I had just described that silly Deluxe Tinker!

So, I 'built' my ideal SAK fishing knife:

After carrying and using this knife on multiple fishing trips, I love it. It has proven to be my ideal fishing SAK. I call it the "Fly Caster".

It is ironic that this thread just popped up...only a couple of days ago...I ordered a second one...should be arriving soon....

Grant it, having the philips on the backside is a little odd for some jobs but it’s sooo much better then a corkscrew, the piers, I honestly think are one of the dumbest tools, there just oversized tweezers, in order to do a job your going to need a multitool which might break so probably a real set of pliers, so switch it up with the saw, and swop out the mini blade for a nail file or awl like on the alox’s..

Nice writeups  :tu:

I know a lot of people look at the 91mm pliers just as oversized tweezers, and not worth having cause it can't handle bigger jobs and all...

But that's just the point... I know what kind of job that little pliers can handle, and it's perfectly suited for what i need or expect in an EDC sak. I don't need it do do "big" jobs, if i need to do a big job i'll just get an actual pliers. Not planning to fix a car engine with it...  :P
But for the taks it is suitable for, i'd rather have one in my pocket than not because i'll use it as such.

The backside phillips doesn't bother me much, it can only take light torque but i have other solutions if i occasionally need heavier torque (for a SAK of course).

All in all, it's a great all around 4 layer "tinkerer's" SAK  :salute:

I have them and I like them...but I generally don’t carry any because there are two closely related options that I use way more often. Troubleshooter is one since it just adds the Metal Saw. I never see that as a weight or size penalty in anything I carry. The other is the Matterhorn...same knife, but with its 60% serrated main blade.

To me that only leaves very minor advantages for the DT...at least one copy has the can key and the other is the lack of a hook.

This assessment presupposes one has a Troubleshooter or Matterhorn at one's disposition... For those of us who have not, the readily available DT is a sweet SAK. If only the backside Philips were more durable and less clunky - that's really all that keeps the DT from being my EDC.

Nevertheless, happy to join this club!

The intent is simply to say why I don’t carry the DT much, if at all.

I agree about the backside Phillips...and I suppose why I also put an inline Phillips in my Troubleshooter Lite mod, despite the ‘double-up’. Nearly Champ sized, but it has the tools I use most.

While i'd love for something like this to exist...:

the backside Phillips it's ok by me. Between the can opener and my modded bits used with the bottle opener, i can get by dealing with screws in a pinch, and with the backside phillips only for light torque situations  :tu:

Agreed. Backside is okay with me too. That knife would be cool too if it did exist. All the Phillips versions have some sort of compromise but that doesn’t bother me. Though I do wish Victorinox had more Phillips options for 91mm and that they didn’t mind putting two or more in a knife that isn’t a CT.

The mod I mention above (and added a comparison pic including the DT with some of my other backside Phillips knives that get used):

Yup... That SAK with the inline #1 phillips (as on the 111mm models) instead of the mag glass, paired with the #2 inline phillips would be a tinkerer's deram SAK for sure  :D
I'd put the two phillips layer in the middle though... :D

 Thanks and agreed about having a #1 and #2 on board with the same knife. I know many would consider that going overboard...but I also think a couple of other backside tools would be great. Like a 0 and 00 on the backside. 00 could go in the hook space behind the scissors.

:iagree: Victorinox should definitely re-visit the backside tools eventually. Just imagine if the rather useless (imho) hook were replaced by a long and slim small screwdriver.

Thing is....yeah those lovely backside screwdrivers are great....my recently acquired Ranger has one. And I can see where it could be useful in some situations.

However......

If I need a screwdriver, I usually have one around. I have actual screwdrivers all over the place. I have some in my vehicles. I used to carry a couple in my brief case. Why?  Don't know: didn't often use 'em.

The hook seemed silly to me at first. Until I started using it for unusual little tasks. One I started using the hook, I found more ways to use the hook. My mentality about it changed.

The hook is somewhat unique.  It has a wide range of uses that actually come in handy, sometimes when I'm not near other tools. When fishing, I find it useful for tying knots and feeding line through guides, etc...but it can also be useful for removing hooks (so are the pliers). It's like having a tiny extra hand in your pocket.

Want to put an eyelet in some wire to hang a picture or to make a snare or wire tie?  Oh, that hook is perfect.....

A backside screw driver....can tighten or loosen a small screw. That's about it...unless you are willing to pry with your small driver.... *** eeek ***

So....hook more functionality, and more unique functionality. Screwdriver.....I usually have access to a dozen if I need one....and awl it does is turn a screw.   :dunno:

Hard to argue with that. I agree that the hook is a tool without equivalent in most toolboxes. So if the hook currently has a place in your life, I understand you wouldn't want to trade it for just another small screwdriver.  :salute:

I don’t dislike the hook, and perhaps the small ‘humpback’ SD is a better target for a replacement.  It’s the near-square shaft portion of the hook makes it a better candidate IMO.

But I also think the chisel makes more sense behind the wood saw and the SD behind the metal saw...but I understand the layout and fit reasons why they go where they do.

The chisel is another cool tool. But, aside from messing around for fun, I don't think I've ever used it in the heat of battle.

Of course, I don't have many SAKs with a chisel....  :dunno:

I use mine a fair amount. Enough that I’ve had to learn how to sharpen them...which is easier said than done. It’s another reason why I’d choose the Troubleshooter(s) over the DT.

Well i like both the hook and the idea of a small phillips SD, however i have to give it that the hook it's a lot harder to find when needed than a mini SD, and it also fits the placement on the back better than an SD, which is always a compromise.

Nevertheless, i have to say that adding a Quattro in your wallet, increases the SD capability for "in a pinch" jobs exponentially... :D

The only thing that annoys me a bit on the quattro is the darn habit Vic has of over-polishing and edge smoothing of the SD's. It tends to slip out of the screws more because of this. I usually use a bit of abrasive to rough up the edges a bit. It's not supposed to look/feel like a shiny smooth jewel, it's supposed to turn small screws effectively...
