2021 Limited Edition Alox: Poop color - No Cadet
on: December 07, 2020, 12:44:35 AM
So I'm hearing a rumor that the Alox LE series for 2021 will be quite different.  Out are the Pioneer and Cadet, and in are the Hunter Pro and Pioneer X.  The classic remains.

Color is purportedly "Tiger Orange."

Can anyone confirm?

I like the little joke “perfect for collectors”
Yea it fits right in with the other 6 years.

Would be great if they expanded the collection but to just drop certain models is a bit crap..... and isn’t the pioneer one of the flagship models.

I can’t confirm, but I heard the same rumor (with the same photo).

I’m of two minds about the replacement of the Pioneer with the X. It disrupts my Annual Pioneer collection, but at the same time I already have orange Pioneers, and this  will give me a Pioneer X for my orange collection.

Totally agree with both sentiments.  Orange is welcome, Pioneer X is welcome, but why'd they have to nix the Cadet?

I don't get it. The whole point of creating a collectors line is so that you can continue collecting the same things. I don't think this is going to go over too positively with other collectors and they may have to rethink their decisions.
Desperately searching for a 2015 Alox Classic!

While I do prefer the Pioneer X over the regular Pioneer for EDC use, I thought I was going to have a sweet LE Pioneer collection 20 years from now, not a mix of Pioneers, Pioneers X's and God knows what else they're going to throw in the mix...

I'm "happy" I only went for the Pioneer, and not the entire line-up each year, else I would've been extremely p*ssed right now .

Maybe this is the right time to stop this yearly thing and only buy the colours I truly like, instead of just buying each version to have a complete collection...

Not cool Victorinox, not cool at all...  :td:

I already feel bad for my Pioneer collection, and I'm still getting a Pioneer (be it a different version, which still disrupts the collection in my opinion), but for those who only bought the Cadet, this is indeed a nightmare...

P.S.: This reminds me that I still have to check for that blue 2015 Cadet (stores only just re-opened here last week), that is if you're still interested after this disturbing news...

With the 74mm line rumored to having been discontinued, it makes me wonder about the Cadet.

But, it makes me wonder if, instead, Victorinox is trying to increase sales of the Alox Hunter Pro. Given European knife laws, Vic really probably isn't moving that many. I honestly never saw the point. You've got a knife that is Spyderco money, with worse ergonomics that the Buck 110; and steel worse than Buck's 420HC; which itself is decent but not what I'd call high end; when most $100 street price Spyderco are S30V, BD1N, or VG-10, among others.

I always buy the Cadet and the Pioneer and skip the Classic.  I love that they added a Pioneer X and will happily buy at least one of those.  Although I'll miss the Cadet, if they don't offer it for one year, then they don't offer it for one year.   My collection 20 years from now will still be complete.

Kinda reminds of when Land Rover brought the Defender back to the US in 1994 (after leaving the US entirely 20 years prior).  They sold a limited number of Defender 90's in the US in '94, '95, skipped '96, then came back with a few in '97.   This just means that the Cadets we already have will be even more special and rare in the future.

When they came out with the pioneerX I dropped my farmer and have stuck with it, now since they came out with the farmerX I’ll be dropping my PioneerX and going with that when I get it in 19days,
The cadet is a nice little setup and I can’t see them ditching it, the only thing I can see is them adding on, and making it like a tinker with the awl and philips on the back and keeping a nail-file on the top rather then the second knife..

No Pioneer? That is sad. Not that I collect them but it was a good opportunity to get a color I liked instead of the plain silver.
Don‘t like the PX, no use for the Hunter (sold the one i had after a few weeks) and the LE classic is too expensive for what it is. I guess I will get a 2020 Pioneer after all

I'm excited to see that they chose orange for 2021.  I am not excited to see that they switched the Pioneer to the Pioneer X.

I don't think I can quite put my finger on what irks me....  but for now I'll say that I wouldn't choose a Pioneer X in that color, even though it's absolutely the color I wanted to see a LI in,

Why didn't they just add the X to the existing lineup? I thought they were experts in getting us to buy the same thing over and over again but they missed a trick here.

Very true  :iagree:.

More than likely I would've bought the Pioneer and the Pioneer X from then on.

I can't confirm the rumor either.
If so, not much will change for me. Of the Alox LE, I only collect the 93mm.
Whether Pioneer or PioneerX doesn't make a big difference to me.
But for the 84mm collectors, it's disappointing.
Seems to be a color that didn't exist before, I find that very gratifying!

One could also look at it from a different perspective. The Cadet and Pioneer collection is now complete. A new PX and Hunter Pro collection comes into existence.

While I understand the frustration of those members who have collected the Pioneer and Cadet LE from the beginning, I myself fell down the SAK rabbit hole only last year - and I am too stingy to cough up top dollar for the 2015 and 2017 models. Consequently, I won't have a complete collection of Pioneer LE, which I regret. However, I can look forward to having a complete PX collection at retail prices. And if Vic ditches the PX for the FX in a few years time, new fans will have a chance to build a complete collection. Something ends, something begins.

I hear what you're saying, but at what point does it changes from being "a collection" into "just a SAK in a nice new colour"?

What if they do a 2021 and 2022 Pioneer X, and in 2023 switch to the Farmer X, do 2 LE Pioneer X's count as a collection?

In my opinion 5 years of Pioneers don't even really count, I was hoping this would be something for the next 20 years or so...

But I've been there before, a couple of years ago you could collect these nice Ferrari scale models with a monthly magazine, first edition was real cheap.  From the second month it was normal price, still good so far.

But after only 5 or 6 months, newspaper shops didn't sell them anymore, and you couldn't get your hands on the new editions, leaving me with 6 Ferrari's out of, what was supposed to be, a 52 piece collection or so...

So instead off a collection, I ended up with 6 toy cars...

I know Victorinox never claimed that it would last for 20 years or so, but somehow I thought this was going to be here for some time.

As Bill Clinton would put it, it depends on what the meaning of the word "collection" is  ;) I for one will just gobble up every yearly PX as long as they keep coming and not look back.

The previous LE pioneers (Cadets and Classics too) I would call a series that is always a nice part of a collection. It is typical for Victorinox that you often don't really know what they do next. A few years ago there was e.g. rumors that Alox will be discontinued.

First of all I'm glad Victorinox does still produce colored Alox at all. As Sneider already mentioned a few years ago they (inofficially) talked about stopping Alox production.
I was also very positivelly surprised about the Pioneer X Winter magic. A new Alox scale. Wow.  :ahhh

I think it's a good idea they want to give us the possibility to have the new model Pioneer X and Hunter Pro in the collection,
but they should just add the 2 new models to the existing 3, so each collector could decide which models to collect.
This could be a win-win situation  ;)

I'm not a collector of any series of sort but rather like to have a nice colour for my alox models that I carry and use.

I prefer the Pioneer or Cadet for my pocket.

Shame they just removed both while I love orange.
Actually makes me a little sad now  :-\

I was “collecting” the Cadets to use them...  :ahhh

It was not a serious collection. I missed the first few years, and I would try to buy a discounted one at the end of the season if I remembered. Nevertheless, if this rumour turns out to be true it will be a disappointment.

This nudged me over the edge to order one of the last blue 2020 Cadets I could find locally, so thanks for the heads-up...

I really enjoy the cadet so that's a shame to see and to be hoenst by making it a Pioneer X they made this a much more expensive yearly undertaking surely?

Not everyone would want the weight and thickness of scissors and to drop one of the best lightweight SAK carries that you can customise to your outift/mood.

They should put scissors on the Hunter Pro, just to make sure everyone gets a pair of scissors.
Whether they want them or not!

(I think I'm gonna love this colour though.... so I am powerless to resist)

I wonder if all the nagging and clamoring for years about getting the Pioneer X made Victorinox figure that this was a good idea... or maybe it was the number of sales.
