My geography is off...
on: January 06, 2021, 02:09:28 PM
I bought a stupid little thing for the Jeep on Christmas day because it amused me.  I pretty wellnforgot about it after that, but while looking for something else in my email this morning, the tracking info came up.  I figured I'd have a look and see if it was going to be here soon, more for something to do than anything else.

Thats when I found out that Qatar is apparently between Florida and Nova Scotia.  I thought it was on the other side of the Atlantic Ocean, but I guess I have a lot to learn about geography.  After all, it is a $3 item, and not really worth sending on a round the world trip....

I think someone in USPS skipped geography classes quite often.

Maybe that was the most efficient or fastest route after all. We don't know about the logistics of it :dunno:
Still funny though :)

Like a lot of folks, I have bought quite a lot of stuff from Amazon. I have seen tracking go from Toronto area to BC a few times, and then back. I get a lot of "Package will be late due to outside circumstances" quite often at Sudbury. One package I ordered from the US went from Michigan to Florida twice. With that said, I have received most of my packages ordered online. I even had a package ordered from China that took 6 months to get to me...but it did. I was shocked at that.

You're not alone Tet.  We had a Christmas gift head East to West several times for reasons no sane person could tell, causing it to be late.  I've had 2 packages that I shipped to the UK never make it.  One completely disappeared, never to be found...

That's crazy logistic...last year I had tracked a package from another country which had arrived 10 miles away from my town, only to find it flew to another country and back in the next two days.

I am hoping this pandemic would become a 'stress' test for all the mail services, such that someday, they may find ways to improve for efficiency in the future.

Yup, had something similar happen years ago with FedEx. An ebook reader I ordered from the Netherlands to my home in Croatia, both in the EU ended up in Korea.

When I emailed FedEx about it they said that that was cause their sorting facility for the region was there. Yeah, right :megaslap:

There's a thread here about it somewhere.

It did eventually find its way to me but I haven't used FedEx since

No, we don't know their logistics.... but I will say it is a lot easier to drive to Florida from here than it is to drive to Qatar from either here or Florida!   :ahhh

Last year I sent a package from Belgium to The Netherlands.
After 3 weeks still nothing...
The recipient lives on a 2h drive from here.
Postal customer support wasn't quite helpful and said they couldn't do anything since it had to be off radar for a month.

After a month, they said they were sorry...
No refund since it wasn't insured.
I stated that I payed for a service that I never got, and should at least get my postage costs back.
"Insurance..."
- but insurance is taken for damage to third parties.  YOU should be insured in case you damage/lose my property...
"No, insurance must be payed for by the sender"

They did tell me the package was scanned in France...
"Wot?!"

Once home I emailed the French postal services and explained what went wrong.
A day later I got a reply saying they had my package in a warehouse, but were clueless what to do with it. They'd try their best getting it back on track and I was free to call them for any more info.

3 days later, the parcel arrived at the destination

I remember that story :)
Next time, grab your bike and deliver it personally (without a detour to France or Qatar ). I'll make coffee.

Hahaha I recently had to either get glasses or a bigger phone.  I guess I didn't get a big enough phone to be able to type properly!

Sadly I have the biggest phone on the market so I imagine glasses won't be far behind!

I think you are right.  I'm currently waiting for a package that was sent from the US to Australia VIA JAPAN !  ????

Hopefully it will get here eventually.

I ordered stuff from a seller in New Jersey; and it ended up in Georgia and had to come back here. I've had lots of "apparently someone doesn't realize that Virginia is closer than the state it's in now!" And then I knew a guy in the Midwest who ordered something from NY state, the post office temporarily lost it, he put out a lost package claim, to which he was called from a post office in Guam.

But, eh, Florida, to Qatar, to Nova Scotia. How the heck did it end up three-quarters of the way around the world?! Talk about a snafu!

As someone who has been working in transport and logistics for 15 ish years, that doesn't make a lot of sense to me either.
