Tools With Meaning(?)
on: March 11, 2021, 02:30:11 AM
I recently picked up a Leatherman Micra for my Mom, and a Rebar for myself both in the remembrance of my late father (and her beloved husband of 45 years), who passed five years ago. Due to her Micra having personalized engraving, I’m not going to be showing it off.

Who else has a tool with meaning to it, either assigned, or earned (handed down)?

I have a couple of those: the "cheap and cheerful" sak clone seen in my avatar; reminds me when I went fishing every Sunday with my father; although he was overprotective and hence against anything with sharp blades or "pokey stuff", he would remind me to always bring it with us on those trips. Next is my PSTII, as it was a gift from my ex wife, from when we had good times across Italy and Spain. Then is onto many hand and power tools from my father, my uncles (both paternal and maternal side) and my brother, sadly all passed away, with whom I learnt to do car and house maintenance jobs. Those tools, even some over 60 years old, stil work flawlessly. Then its my 4D Maglite, my first real torch/flashlight, bought with my first real paycheck, at the now defunct Naval Station Roosevelt Roads; never found on sale the 6D's that the MP's carried!, but nevertheless great memories.

My Juice XE6 was purchased during a port stop while on a deployment in the Navy.  I carried it a lot during that deployment and others following, so in some way it is a symbol for me of my time in the Navy.

I have two that are very dear to me.

My Woodsman (Explorer + wood saw) was my first SAK and it was given to my by my parents. It was bought in Geneva where the official Victorinox shop engraved my name in the scale. On top of the sentimental value of being my first SAK/mutlitool, it was also the only one I had during my years transitioning to adulthood, as is also a discontinued and I think brilliant model for both EDC and outdoors.

My second was also a gift from my parents, a CyberTool 34 (M), for graduating post-secondary. It's become one of my most common EDCs as it's simply such a useful model in my field. I very nearly lost it forever to airport security when the Mrs. quickly grabbed my bag to use for a day trip, not realizing it was inside. By some miracle, I was able to get hold of someone who could return it to me (which they aren't supposed to do, apparently).

 :salute:  Good post.

I have a tendency to keep any tool given to me or won on MTO over any tool I bought.

Two tools that have a deeper meaning to me are my Case large trapper Psalm 23.  I bought this as memento for my son.   I carry on my off days.  I also have a Classic that I carry everyday.  Folderbeholder gifted me another which I gave to my youngest daughter.  We took a family trip to Muir Woods which he talked about for years afterwards.  When I saw the SAK it didn't initially spark any emotion but shortly after it hit me.  My daughter an I carry these SAKs daily.

My Grandfather gave me some money while on his deathbed in Hospice. I promptly went to Gander Mountain and bought the Exclusive Camo Surge. I will never sell that tool.

The airport security is why I keep a prepaid flat-rate padded mailer in my travel.  I almost lost a lighter that meant a lot to me.  Lighters were suppose to allowed but it was a torch lighter.  I asked for it back and stepped out of line.  I went to the gift shop and they gave me a mailer to address and just charged shipping so I could mail to myself.  Since then I keep the mailer in case I forget to remove something or something isn’t allowed that I didn’t realize.

I don’t carry it anymore, but I just realized after seeing it recently in a drawer. It is an old Case knife my parents gave me as a kid, that I now keep as a keepsake.

That's a great idea! Nothing worse than being forced to lose something you hold dear.

The Transformers character, Soundwave, is a character my older brother and I both like. I may give him this Charge+ as a gift, or keep it for myself and sell my Wave+. I have also ordered a Leatherman Micra for myself, and my two older brothers, to commemorate the fifth year passing of our Dad. Once it comes in, I’ll show a picture of mine.

Multitool-wise I have two.  A Leatherman Wave I picked up in Anchorage during my honeymoon, and my Leatherman Charge that I believe was the first MT.O tool.  They both sit on display on my shelves next to a Buck Knife I got for my Grandfather.  I was able to get it back when he passed.

Frequently I don’t think of SAKs as their own thing and not necessarily as tools, but I think these two deserve mentioning in this thread.

A pair of Ramblers, one mine and one is my wife’s, with a scrimshaw rendering of a picture from our wedding day.

Were you the guy who posted the Alaska Wave a few years back?  If so, do you remember the store that you bought it at?

I have a few.

1. My late father's Leatherman Pulse and Shrade Tough Tool ST1 hold special meaning to me.
2. A pair of American Camper multi-tools also hold special meaning as archery range tools with my Dad.
3. My first knife which is a cheap Ireland Hobo given to me by my Dad.
4. My first multi-tool, a Coleman Pro Lock that I bought for myself.
5. A pair of commemorative multi-tools engraved in regards to 2 of my late pets.
6. A Leatherman Knifeless Fuse that was my constant companion for years.
7. A Victorinox Classic that I bought from a fellow MT.O member that has wooden scales from HMS Victory. I grew up reading everything I could about age of sail historical stuff, and still have a very soft spot about nautical things.

Maybe?  It would have been a lot of years back though, since I got it in 2008.  It has a picture of a fisherman on it and says "Alaska" on the side.  I don't remember what store it was, but it was fairly close to the hotel, which I think was the Hotel Captain Cook.

A good tool, and you chose a worthy successor to it, to. I’m considering getting one myself, just to add in to my basic daily rotation.

Not exactly a tool, but represents a tool...

My son made this small wooden Sak, with help of my wife, as gift for me on father's day 3 years ago.
He even made drawings of all parts

It's the most awesome gift that I received in my life, after obviously my kids.

Yes, and probably one to be cherished for life (at least, I would). I was thinking maybe make a display for it, including the "blueprints", for all to enjoy?

Anyway, kudos on your family, Hevy, as it appears that you all share common interests, thoughts, and care for each other. :hatsoff:

(And sorry if I was being nosy.)

Edit- Boy do I love the attention to details: the serrations; the small driver at the tip of the opener!!! :2tu:

I keep this little Sak well kept in a metal box. My plan is to put It in a exibition box in my room. I also kept all drawings for this purpose. (You almost read my mind)

My family is well united, and with everyone ready to suport each other. It's a bless and a privilege. (Maybe due portuguese heritage with a part of italian blood , just my 2c)

Thank you for your kindly words!
