Nice final pic Appleandrew! Was fun posting the calculators, but I'm now all out of ones to post!

Day 30
Challenge complete, and also our roadtrip. Got back today after 4 days in the mountains near Lesotho.  :tu:

I really enjoyed carrying the Orange Alox and found I could get probably 80% of what I needed done with this little SAK, and there will be times I'll carry it again, but I think I'll stay with my 91mm options for most of my daily needs.  :salute:

I didn't even realize how dull the main blade had become on my Mini Champ until I started using it more during this challenge. But I've had it for over 20 years and have never sharpened it.

I'm a complete newbie at sharpening knives, but the Victorinox dual knife sharpener put a nice edge back on it (and on the small blade on an Explorer). I don't have the experience to say if it (or I) did a really good job, but it's sharper now so that's improvement!

Anyone with more experience got an opinion on this sharpener?

I think many good advices have been given, and to quickly sum it up--I personally would rate the pull thru sharpener as the lowest, since it does pull away a far amount of metal and I only would reserve that for trashy knives that I don't care and if I don't have anything else to repair/sharpen the knife with.

Free hand sharpening stone is king, without a doubt.  Given enough practice and skill, you could virtually sharpening any sharps you want.  I tend to use free hand sharpening stone only for those knives that I love and needs extra attention.

For most other knives, so as long the sharpening angle is between 15-20 deg per side, I would try to use my Spyderco Sharpmaker.  It really is the best compromise between money spent, practice time and result.  Unlike free hand shaprening which you need constantly a fair amount of practice to yield good result, with just the minimum practice, you could get pretty stunning result from Sharpmaker.  The only complain I have about this unit is even with CBN/diamond rods, the unit is meant to "keep sharp", especially on harder steel like S30V or S90V.  If the edge on a supersteel is too dull, it will take a looong time to get it sharp on the sharpmaker.

When you're as clumsy as me, would you be able to keep the angle steady?  Do you just need to keep the blade perpendicular to the base?  Is there an advantage to using this over a set of stones? (I'm guessing the answer is yes, and that it's actually easier to maintain a consistent angle)  Can it get as sharp as 8000-10,000 grit stones?  Am I asking too many questions?
Long sharpening session will fatigue anyone, and hard to keep the angle constant.  But as stated above, I do think Sharpmaker is probably the best compromise there is.

Keep the blade perpendicular to base at all time, yes.  But it is a common misconception and mistake to hold the handle level while doing the sharpening.(Yes, even Sal gets it wrong on his instructional video)  If the knife you are sharpening is not a wharncliffe, then as you approach the upswept of the blade on the rods, you should always lift the end of the handle up respectively, so the tiny segment of the blade touching the rod is always perpendicular to the rods.  That is the only way to keep the bevel even and consistent from body to tip, otherwise, the bevel would widen a lot at the tip if you are not careful.

The same logic would apply to sharpening on a motorized belt(such as work sharp).
The earlier infomercial/advertising was pretty poorly done and quite misleading, as if you could just pull the knife straight thru and you are done:

They must have received a healthy amount of (angry) inquires about ruined bevel, and instructional 2 years later is a lot more accurate:

Day 30

Final analysis...

Ive been looking forward to this challenge for quite some time. The Classic is a .... well... classic. So many people out there carry this as their one and only, and it does the job.

On the outset, there are a few distinct advantages to this knife for me.
- it's extremely light
- it blends in to an office environment
- all tools open like a slipjoint instead of a "butterfly"
- it has 3 tools I want in an EDC, and is about the lightest pair of scissors around.

However, there is just one drawback.
- I feel like the blade could be a teensy bit deeper. I've never felt the blade on the LM Micra to be too small, as an example...
- when it comes to impromptu food prep, I have to give it to a medium sized SAK... The Classic just doesn't cut it.

I thought about the Ambassador, but I'd have to modify the file to an SD, and I'd just rather not, when I have other options.

So combining the several positives and the negative I'll say for the next long while, the Classic will accompany me at work for package opening duties.

The Classic alone really hasn't been burdensome, so I'll probably carry it for the next few days until I'll need something else for the weekend with outdoor cooking on schedule.

I think I got my Sharpmaker when the band R.E.M. was topping the charts and quiche was still popular. My base is just a chunk of plastic with holes in it. The underside is flat...sort of. Sal Glesser probably made it himself...in his garage...

I think it came with some brass rods that served as a guard....not sure where those went.

Still works, though.  :D

Quiche isn't popular?

Excellent work, everyone! The calculator theme was an added bonus!

Thanks to Barry for getting the ball rolling!

Day 30 bonus

Time for a celebratory beer, with the Midnite Minichamp doing the opening honours. And a pic of all my pocket rockets together with a Wenger watch case opener branded for Omega and a Victorinox baker’s knife branded for Alipro to add some blue and green Alox loveliness!

Day 30

Kudos to Barry for suggesting this challenge. It’s been fun to shake things up a little. However, I was pleasantly surprised to find myself brought all the way back round to where I started with 58s - the Midnite Manager (in blue). Everything a multi tool lightweight like me could possibly need. Now don’t panic - I’m not about to trade in all my other SAKs. But I am looking forward to pairing my Blue Pioneer (or Cadet, or Yeoman or …) with this little beauty.

All the best y’awl.

:ahhh Day 30 :ahhh

Well here we are, the end of the line. It's been a fun month - I've only done a small number of challenges in my short time here, but this has probably been the most enjoyable just for seeing the inventive ways people have been able to use the smaller SAKs.

As a mainly urban office dweller who needs to be wary about what he carries where, the 58mm line is definitely one I can get away with having on me and the Classic and Mini Champ have certainly come in handy for the majority of things I've needed to do. I've certainly come to appreciate them more and I'm now going to have to remember to take the Classic off my keyring next time I go abroad or to somewhere I'm likely to be searched.

Day 30.

I've really enjoyed this challenge and it's been a great chance to see what a huge range of things you can achieve with such a small knife. The Classics are almost endlessly fun and carryable. Whilst they might not cut it (forgive me) as your ideal kitchen knife let's be honest that at 58mm that's a heck of an ask.

The Executive is a fairly good sweet spot and has an excellent file so it always wins out for me over the Ambassador. If only Vic would bring out a Delemont PTC.

Today has been a quiet day for my Mountains are Calling Classic (and that could be the Drakensberg Max - I did go up the Sani pass many years ago from Natal and have been to a few camps in the 'Berg) and here we are on my team HTC cycling jersey. I'm a Mark Cavendish fan

Day 30

Hard to believe today is the last day.

Today I needed to augment the Classic with a pair of wire cutters to cut a metal hangar.  I did this using the Signal, which is fitting because I think the Classic will make a good compliment to the LM Signal.  After I was done, I thought I would try sharpening the Classic using the Signal’s sharpener.  I definitely would not recommend it on a regular basis, because it is awkward to me due to the small size and curve.  It did succeed in touching up the edge that had been dulled through cardboard and tape cutting amongst other things, so it did work.

Day 30 !

Rain all day and not even any mail to open so thought I'd close with a family photo of all the 58s I could find in the house. (Disclaimer: The red Classic SD and the Classic Alox in the upper right belong to Mrs. P. She also has an original Mini Champ, but due to scheduling issues it was unavailable for this publicity shoot.)

It's not a lot of SAKs compared to some of you, but it's my little collection (+2).

To sum up this challenge? Right tool, right time.

This challenge felt slightly weird. Normally I have the Mini Champ in my pocket and a 91mm on a suspension clip or belt pouch (Explorer at home and Swiss Champ when out). The Mini Champ handles smaller, precision stuff with ease, leaving the 91mm for the bigger things.

Got to admit that I missed the 91mm's ease with the bigger things. Sometimes a bigger blade or bigger scissors would have made the job easier/quicker/less fiddly. Likewise, the Mini Champ's smaller tools do things the 91mm can't handle.

So for me at least, carrying two SAKs suits me best. They complement each other.

Thank you all for the great photos and stories during June. This has been fun!

Hope to see some of you for the Daredevil Challenge in August and in other threads here.
SAKs:

Day 30:

Another busy day for the Esquire!

Beans to open for soaking....

The inevitable bit of garden twine to clip....

And I got to play Sir Galahad and rescue fair Mrs Nix from a fire breathing dragon inch worm that had dared to assault her cherished person....

Another good challenge nearly wrapped up here.

Like most of you, I found that the small 65mm knife did very well for most of my daily pocket knife tasks. There were several times when I needed a can opener. Fortunately the kitchen has one. There were a couple of time when a tool on a Gerber MP 400 was "needed". I wasn't carrying the MP400 on a regular basis, I just took it with me when I suspected I'd be able to use it. I could have carried a proper tool or two instead, but it was nice to use the MP400 a bit.

In the kitchen, dedicated kitchen knives or a food processor got used for a few jobs. I don't see this as a negative finding with regard to the 65mm. If I'm in my kitchen or garage, I'll have an appropriate tool close at hand.

Regardless, the number of times that the Esquire did come in handy was pretty remarkable. And I think that's where these knives really come into their own: they are always on hand and ready for those small surprise tasks. For me, I find that it is very easy to reach into a pocket and pull out the Esquire to use the scissors for a small task or the knife for a larger task. In my day-to-day life, there just aren't that many tasks that a small knife can't handle. It may not be the optimum tool for the job, but it will be capable.

Which brings me to the Compact. I started to think about how the tool set in the Compact and the Classic overlap quite a bit. The one tool that I really would have like to have had on hand during this challenge was a can opener. Yup, I used the kitchen can opener, but if this had not been a challenge and I had had the Compact in my pocket, I would have used the combo tool to open my cans. It is just easier (and more fun). This challenge has made me start to think of the Classic/Esquire/Ambassador as being smaller versions of the Compact. Or, perhaps, the Compact as being a really big Classic or Rambler with a can opener. And the Esquire just seemed to be missing a bit of horsepower during this challenge. Even if it was able to accomplish what I need, I missed the ergonomics of a bigger handle or the reach of a larger blade.

Because of this, I don't think the 58/65/74mm will be a real EDC choice for me. Sure, they get 80-90% of what I do done. But that Compact just seem more capable and more pleasant to use. This challenge has made me look at the Classic as being a good augmenting SAK. A SAK to be carried with another multitools. For example, I like the Vic Camper...but no scissors. Classic to the rescue. I think the combination of pliers based multitool and Classic would be fantastic. The Classic would manage 80% of the day's tasks because it is just easier to fish the Classic out of a pocket and use it. But the Gerber MP400 would be there to drive a Phillips, loosen a nut, or bend a wire.

Could it be a solo EDC tool? I think so, this challenge has demonstrated that well enough. Will it? I doubt it. Perhaps on some lazy days, but I think this challenge reaffirmed my fondness of the Compact more than anything else.   ;)

Addendum: for the record, I missed my Rambler's combo cap lifter/small Phillips driver tool....*** runs to check tally sheet ***....zero times.  ;)

Day 29

Not much work for the Executive today, itching to get back to the full variety now I've gotten back into EDC channels.

Today's picture is a test of a set up I'd use to record YT videos, I've been wanting to start an EDC channel for a long time. What do you guys think of the lighting and backdrop?   :dwts:

(Image removed from quote.)
I like the lighting, but I'd go with a lighter-colored backdrop. I've seen a lot of YouTubers have to hold their hand behind the item as the item was a dark color and didn't show up well against their dark backgrounds. Maybe try it out with a black SAK?

Good luck with the channel! Let us know the name so we can check it out.

At least you’re consistent Nix with your take on the Rambler. I’m not quite with you though and in fairness even I accept that the Wenger PTC as Barry and many others have said over years is a tool to be reckoned with. But part of the fun with these Challenges is about coping and making-do not necessarily choosing to use a toolset.

These smaller SAKs have a solid place for most people who wouldn’t think twice. The sheer popularity of the Classic speaks to its worth for normal people who will never read this forum. Unsung hero? Not really but these SAK’s deserve the title Pocket Rocket indeed

I guess it's still a challenge even though I carry a MiniChamp with me every day.
After all the talk of the 74mm's, I think I'd love to see a MiniChamp in that size. Sure, I know it's just wishful thinking, but that would certainly be nice.

Thinking of a way that I could finish out this challenge, in style, I had several ideas,,, but ended up with another battery changing photo.  Since the small magnetic phillips driver is one of the main reasons that I like the MC, I guess it's only appropriate.

Now...I don't think that the Classic is the #1 seller because it is the most popular EDC or most popular SAK secondary to some theoretical populist appreciation. I suspect that between all the challenge participants, we're responsible for 1/2 of awl Classic sales. And some of the other 8 billion people on the planet have picked up a few as well. They sell well because they are cheap, readily available, recognizable, innocuous, non-threatening, and easy to lose/replace/repeat. Which is no bad thing.  ;)

Day 30 freeeedom

It's been a month! The pocket rockets handled most tasks, falling short in some areas (Pliers, straight pin, combo tool etc.) they're very capable. Personally I just don't like relying on a 58mm blade and as I routinely carry my Minichamp anyway all this challenge really did was introduce me to the 74mms that I now love and will continue to carry supplementary to other tools.

I mostly just missed the fidget factor of other tools and will be looking forward to taking July off of a challenge, even though I do love the participation.

Todays picture is all of my pocket rockets, Escort to Executive. Avoiding glare/reflections is hard
