Day 20/60. Small blade helped carefully ease open a very special parcel via USPS. Positively flew over the pond. And then promptly waded around in treacle with our ParcelFarce. This one’s for you Barry. A repro of an early M-422 USN jacket contract.

Excellent charred stuff Nix. Positively glowing result

Thanks Barry. Ordered middle of last year on the basis that, well, if I didn't commit at the height of a pandemic when would I? Real craftsmanship from a chap called Dave Sheeley who has a solid reputation making USN repro's. Those USN jackets were so much better designed than the A-2 really and ok I could easily buy a secondhand G-1 but that's not the point. It's the detail of this M-422 contract that counts for me and I am looking forward to wearing it in. Though in goat that will take a bit of effort on my part!

Day 22/60 and just some glam on a quiet day.

I loved my father's old Navy flight jacket. Tough as....an old goat.

I don't recall the specific model #, but much the same.

That generation of military gear is hard to beat.  For Day 22, I used the Philips head to tighten a loose latch.

I don't recall the specific model #, but much the same.

Having got into the world of flying jackets in the past few years by some hand of fate I had always been a bit wary of the "Top Gun" look but have come to be fascinated by the little corner of aviation that is the development of flying jackets into WWII. The G-1 design is pretty sensible if you're flying to do battle with its bi-swing back and that was pretty much settled from the off in it's evolution from M-422 into M-422A and then G-1. Much like a SAK if it works then you don't need to improve on it. Curiously the ANJ-3 version without the mouton collar doesn't really wow me.

My first (modern) A-2 was in goat though and it is still a great jacket. Goat really takes some wearing

Day 22

Some outdoor cooking. Never can figure out which end to pull. Turned out to be the other side...

Oxtail in a dutch oven. We call them a potjie (small pot).

Needs to simmer for about 5 hours to ensure the meat is soft, so prep starts around midday.

Enough for the whole family!
