Wrench/Ratchet tattoo
on: July 22, 2021, 09:52:23 PM
Im not sure the interest of tattoos here but Im just looking for some feedback on a design.

Although a mediocre mechanic now ( ) Ive been looking at some designs with wrenches and ratchets.

I want to have them crossed (not like a skull/bones) but more like when flags are crossed.  I was thinking of adding 10mm to the socket on the ratchet but not sure what size to put on the wrench. The wrench will just be a basic combination wrench. Not putting a brand on it.

So my questions are:
1. Whats a good size to put on the wrench?
2. Any additions (or subtractions) I should do?
3. Not sure a good spot for it as my arms are taken. Perhaps tricep area? On calf?

I know this isnt a standard topic here but its tool related. So thanks for any input.

Kind of depends on the design, but the calf Are usually a good spot for tattoos :tu:
My best advice is still to find a tattoo artist you are happy with, that does good work and have him/her help you design it so it fits perfect for the spot you choose

I wouldn't presume to tell you where to get coloured in, but I guess it might be worth considering your desired audience (lets not pretend Tat's aren't an exercise in vanity)

Lots of people will see a forearm, perhaps fewer will see a calf, and less likely up close, a left cheek...well I don't know your lifestyle, but that'll probably get seen only on special occasions by a limited number of people :P

As for nuance in the design - I'm always a fan of layers or "hidden" meanings - they don't have to be particularly special (in fact, when you explain them, they're always a bit "meh" ) - but for example, I once owned a fairly unreliable pushbike that had a lot of 15mm nuts on it, so I kept a 15mm spanner on hand at all times, so (were I to get the same tat) i might go for that size....

The 10mm socket joke is...well it is what it is.

I'm sure at some point you've lost a tool, found a tool, thrown a tool, or have some kind of personalised memory or in-joke that you can apply.
It's not much, but it might feel better than randomly picking a number :P

Were it me - I would not do a ratchet & a wrench, as they are fundamentally the same thing, and it might be nice to have some....I'm not sure juxtaposition is the word I'm looking for? but something like that.
Is there some other reference for mechanic-ing you like? Spark plugs? Feeler gauges? 32 oz hammer? heaven forbid, a workshop manual?

I was going to suggest a 10mm, but Sea Monster beat me to it....

Now that I think about it, considering how quickly and often a 10mm is lost, perhaps it's a good idea to avoid that unless you have a particular desire to be an amputee!   :ahhh

When I messed around with cars the 13mm sockets and spanners were the most used. Perhaps that's because they were close to 5/8 or 9/16 or some other imperial size?
